Great shot! Β We share a similar passion. Β The catch lights suggest you're strobing -- I'm intrigued by the 1/200th shutter speed and the relative clarity out at the wing tips. Β I'd have to go review mine, but I usually don't get that much solid on the tips unless my shutter speed is much faster. Β Regardless: Well done! Β I'm loving the detail on the beak (and that little bit of tongue!)

Thanks Jim!
Β Β  Yes, I am strobing... except with the controllable speed NOT on the shutter
but on the strobe!!! I was first turned onto this by Good-e-nuf, a great scientific kinda guy from California with SPECTACULAR hummingbirds and happy to share his ways of doing it.
Basically through the use of high speed strobes and triggers (check out Yongnuo YN560 an
adjustable strobe that allows your burst of light to be shortened to 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32Β  and 1/64 of the regular strobe speed). The strobes are used in conjunction with flash triggers
from the same company (RF 603C for Canon mount or RF 603N for Nicon mount). When we bought these we shopped for the best prices and got them shipped from the OrientΒ  the strobes were under $70 each and the triggers were packed 2 for under $30. Unbelievable prices for strobes and triggers and the quality far exceeds what I had bought before and for which I had payed much more. We ordered and received our order in just over a week!!!

Β Β  You put a trigger on your camera, another in your hand and one on each strobe (you can also turn the strobes around to the sensor side and they fire when the light from the strobe on the camera reaches them). I prefer to have a trigger on the flashes but my wife doesn't normally... but sometimes, especially if there are other photographers nearby using strobes, the triggers can save the day. By the way... the trigger that you are hand holding can fire the whole set-up from inside the house or at the other end of the yard. The sky is the limit!!!

Β Β  For best results you want to shoot when and where there is minimal ambient lighting... so that it is your light that is lighting the hummer.

We are pretty similar! Β I use Cactus wireless triggers which I got from China at 2 for $50, so I bought 3 pair. Β I set my flash units to the power setting I'm looking for and trigger the camera(s) to fire on one channel and the camera flash hot shoe triggers transmission to the flash units. Β I like this arrangement since I can aim multiple bodies at the expected location of the hummers, firing all bodies at the same moment, and get different angles or different focus depths.

That said, one photo I just love (This Table Is Taken )Β I got by using my iPhone 5S hand-held while I sat stock still right at my feeder waiting for an opportune shot.

Yep... sounds about the same as what we do. Good-e-nuf also advised using 3 to 1 water/sugar ratio AFTER a couple of days of 2 to 1 (which will get all the hummers in the area)... they will still come to your feeder because they get a larger energy boost than everybody's 4 to 1... and they still get all the other things they need from flower nectar and insects.

Late in the season I got the bright idea to tether my Nikons to my laptop so the photos show up there (bigger screen!) right away. Β That made it easier to make initial adjustments and later let me get excited when a shot I thought looked good did in fact show up on the big screen as good! Β I have to use USB cables and extenders as my Nikon bodies predate the WiFi-enabled models.
