*whew* Goodness, this one took a little longer than expected, not to mention it took like 10 minutes to upload.
Ok, so, *ahem* This is a Milkshake/Hot Fudge Sundae/Translucent Liquid Sculpey/Faux Glass Tutorial. Pretty amazing, huh? Anywho.
There are two glass techniques: Simply applying a thick layer of glaze after you bake your charm, or the technique showed with the Sundae (wrapping with a thin layer of translucent clay), which can be used for the Milkshake, if you'd like.
The TLS technique is identical to the technique I use for frosting cupcakes.
Another little tip that you might learn from this tutorial is baking separate pieces and then putting them together. Applying the whipped cream to the Milkshake before you bake it is very difficult, and you'll probably end up smudging the details. Same with applying frosting to cupcakes.
Freezing the milkshake/cupcake before detailing (i.e., giving cake a realistic texture, or making the lines on a milkshake) can help keep you from smudging one side while your working on another.
Rubbing alcohol is your best friend when it comes to TLS. Simply soak an old rag with rubbing alcohol and wipe down any TLS you may have spilt on the table, floor, counters, etc.
Please, please, please, please, please don't comment to correct any spelling/grammar mistakes that I made. The text boxes wouldn't let me change any text after I clicked outside of the box, so I couldn't go back and fix anything, even if I wanted to.
Also, I apologize if the text is difficult to read...

I use sculpey translucent clay, and when I made this the clay didn't turn even slightly translucent. For some reason it's doing that. Am I doing something wrong?

Well, sometimes I've had that problem and it turned out I was actually using white clay... haha. But what might be happening with yours is that it's either too thick or didn't bake a the proper temperature for the proper length of time. Translucency can also vary from brand to brand of clay. So maybe try a few different brands (Sculpey, Premo, Fimo, and Kato are the most popular polymer clay brands) and rolling them out very thinly, which can be difficult to do without tearing, but it helps make for a more translucent milkshake glass. Hope that helps!

check the brightness/color settings on your screen, or try looking at it on a different computer. the pictures shouldn't be appearing so dark that you can't read the text.

Last night I got up my nerve to try out my TLS for the first time. I found your tutorial and decided to make a milk shake. TLS was a bit harder to work with than I thought at first, but I think with a little time and patients I'll get the hang of it. I wanted to thank you for your tutorial and I was happy with my result!

Hey, this is a really awesome tutorial, and I'm looking foward to making a milkshake just like this! Although, I'm not sure what to start with because I'm a really new beginner. Could you tell me what the clay is, exactly? Thank you so much for making this tutorial.

well... it's like play dough for grownups. lol. you use it about the same way, except once you've molded it into the shape you want you can bake it to harden it and keep it forever. ^^ haha does that help at all?

I really need youre help!
I tryed to make a cake, that worked, but when I wanted to add 'frosting' hmm.. didnt work, I just bought Fimo Liquid and I tried to mix it like you do in the tutorials, but I think I had to much Fimo Liquid or to much clay because I didnt get it so pretty white and thick.. I got slimy white with piecies of clay in it xD
do I must stir it longer or add more clay?
I hope you have an awnser for me!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
paperfaceparade In reply to pluisneus [2009-12-08 10:18:37 +0000 UTC]
haha, yeah, stir longer. that just means that the clay didn't get mixed in all the way. sometimes it feels like trying to mix a teaspoon of water into 8 cups of flour. lol. the ratio is hard to get. start out with a fairly smal piece of clay and quite a bit of TLS, then get that stirred up till it's smooth and keep adding clay until you get it right. it helps if you have a tiny, sturdy container and a sturdy stirring utinsel so you can make quick, strong stirring motions. when you stir, press the utinsel really firmly against the inner walls of the container and this should sort of smear the chunks of clay onto the container, which should make it easier to blend with the TLS. hope that helps!

It's funny how in the beginning you have nail polish on... and by the end it disappears. O.o
Good tutorial though. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I tried making it... But mine just failed miserably. It kept falling over while in the oven. DRAT!

paperfaceparade In reply to thereal-karu-chan [2009-11-26 22:01:39 +0000 UTC]
i hate that!! it's happened to me so many times. and then the TLS gets EVERYWHERE and you have to spend like an hour scraping it off your pan (but this was before i discovered that if you just bake the pan with the tls stuck on it, you can just peel it off after it's baked. lol). the best way i've found to get it to stand up is to take a hunk of scrap clay and press the milkshake into it, propping it upright. you'll then have to carefully pry the milkshake from the baked piece of scrap clay, but it keeps the milkshake from falling over.
