Description:

January is an attractive leopard mare whose spots reveal the sunburnt cream coloration underneath. Her leopard has a very messy presentation; her face and forepaws are so heavily spotted that the white is reduced to lacy streaks and patches. Luckily for her, she's no show mare - she's a working herder, and a good one, too. She's trained primarily to work with girzan and zurrochs, but she can handle other species with some extra guidance from her rider. Though her working drive and natural ability to 'read' livestock are acceptable, Jan's real strength is her riding qualities. She's nimble and quick on her feet, with good long legs and a talent for darting through narrow spaces and other difficult feats of footwork. Even when dodging and darting, her gait is remarkably smooth and controlled, with minimal jostling, bumping, and bouncing. Jan also makes a fine broodmare. Since being largely retired to the breeding fields, she's proven herself a good dam. Her clutches tend to be a little larger than average, and she lays well, with no incidents of egg binding or other problems.

On the downside, Nor'Easter is a stormy creature, aptly enough. Though her grumpiness is quite mild as that Flaw goes and she isn't (thank the spirits) aggressive per se, she's still a challenge to work with. She won't let just anyone hop on her back. You've got to earn the spotted mount's respect first, and even then she tends to be moody and irritable. She's got a big, loud voice, too, and doesn't hesitate to use it. Her field is marred with pits and ditches where she likes to dig, working out her restless energy at the slightest excuse - truffle seeking, unearthing burrowing prey, or just plain boredom. And while she's very good at what she does, it's still a little terrifying to ride her, as she's not easily spooked and seems to like the taste of her own adrenaline. She's likely to take a dangerous route or try some flashy trick just for the sheer fun of it, whether asked to or not. Still, the PFA believes these Flaws can be bred out with wise stallion selection, and they considered her too valuable to pass up on the basis of a difficult personality. Still, they strongly recommend matching her to stallions with calmer, more easy-going temperament.
