Description Fact: ponies are machine-washable.

Part One:

Part Two:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There you have it, folks! Can't imagine what revenge Sweetie Belle will want to exact (feel free to note/comment me some suggestions, heheh).

I had to do some sleuthing to guess the layout of Rarity's hallway. It's still a guess. From the frame's perspective, the washroom is pictured directly ahead, the main 'boutique' (where all the magic happens?) and work room is off to the right, round the corner. Behind and to the left is the entrance to the kitchen, and directly to the left is the stairs to upper floors, and beyond them, the side door to the outside world.

I'm really rather happy with the visuals in the hallway scene. These are probably my favourite frames of the series!

I shouldn't need to say it, but MLP:FiM is copyright Hasbro, these stupid comics are not affiliated in any way, yadda yadda, you all know it already.

I like the look that a incredibly drenched Sweetie Belle has, I demand to see something like that in the show, so far we've never seen fur to where it is y'know sticking out from their bodies like this.

*face hoof* Wowwww.....

Epic spinning machine wash speech bubble. My first thought when I saw that was, "How in the hell?!?!" I'm new to digital art, so even THINKING of doing something like that...well, sheesh.

But excellent idea, and execution, and poor Rarity.

I'm not usually one for Sweetiebuse (and Rarity was pretty hard on her, here, and her dialogue is actually a bit harder to take than her actions... the washing machine could just be considered extreme slapstick, after all), but I have to admit this is really quite hilarious. Sweetie is my favourite Crusader; I just love the adorkable cluelessness combined with her persistent optimism in the face of perpetual failure. The facial expressions in this comic were also priceless... Sweetie's cockeyed grin, and all three Crusaders' expressions for the "Detergent in my everywhere" line, lol. It looks as if Scoots is trying not to laugh, Apple Bloom is already bored, and Sweetie is just horrified.

Rarity's expletive in part 2 almost made me spit out what I was drinking at the time, heh.

For some reason my favorite part was discovering that ponies are machine washable. It makes them like adorable talking stuffed animals.
I unofficially declare this fact fanon.

And Sweetie Belle really pulls off the "Spin Cycle" look. So adorable!

This was hilarious, yet slightly dark at the same time. Ponies can survive anvils and pianos to the head, so it's not like she was in real physical danger. But we know that is absurd slapstick comedy, so there is a remove; to contrast, there are real-life stories of people putting pets/babies into washing machines and/or dryers for extended periods of time.

Of course the grimdark aspect of it is dispelled by your comment:

"Fact: ponies are machine-washable."

The meta made me burst out laughing - because the real-life plushies probably are!

Got a huge kick out of SB yelling "Treat me as your equal!" and Rarity's "Hyperbole & A Half" washer settings. Cleanse ALL the things!

SB's hilarious spiral speech bubble also did a lot for the comedy. If it had been just a sound effect - wham wham wham - well.....

Thanks for looking and commenting

There are indeed such stories (and I know of one or two personally, would you believe). Terrible stuff, but for this, hopefully very much inapplicable! It's not supposed to be grimdark at all (conveying the correct setting/atmosphere/context is perhaps something I should focus on a little more (it's all very well for me, knowing what I meant/what the characters are thinking, but the reader hasn't the same luxury). I like ~TwiWrite-Flare's reference to the taffy machine the CMC get yanked into in the actual show (you could bet they wouldn't walk out of that one unscathed!). It's the same kind of thing. As you've picked up on, the spiral text implies that Sweetie Belle is not in so much discomfort that she can't deliver a bloody good moan in her sister's direction. She is also simply a bit dizzy, fluffy and soapy at the end!

I'd quite like "ponies are machine-washable" to have been included as a joke in the comic, unfortunately it was retrospective and only occurred to me while I was uploading, haha.

Anyway, all feedback is taken on board. Plenty of food for thought for whatever comics are released in the future

I truly HATE to be critical, but I guess that that is what these comment sections are for. Either way, if your not interested in hearing a less positive comment you'll know not to read beyond this point. You may also skip to my last paragraph if you would like to read only my positive feedback.

I was genuinely interested in the comic progression up until about panel seven of the second part of this series. It was there that I started becoming concerned for where the comic was going and continued on to part three in hopes for a satisfactory punchline to put my worries to rest. I'm sorry to say that it didn't come. It may simply be because I don't find abusive Rarity enjoyable at all. I was simply expecting an embarrassed Rarity and then an amusing punchline. After all, Rarity getting upset or embarrassed is one of the funnest thing about her.

Anyway, sorry to be so negative. I know you can't please everypony and I really have liked several of your other pieces (you mentioned expecting a mixed reaction earlier anyway). Let me end on a positive note. Your art is great throughout all three of these parts and (despite the fact that the Sweetie-abuse isn't at all my thing) I thought that her mussed up fur in part three looked great. Also, the twirling speech bubble was well executed. You also have a definite mastery of the awesome facial expressions that are so typical of this show. In other words, your art and execution were flawless as far as I'm concerned. I just wish that the over all joke had been more to my liking. Anyway, I'm still going to watch you; as I said earlier, I really liked several of your other pieces.

ParallaxMLP In reply to TwiWrite-Flare [2012-02-15 01:07:33 +0000 UTC]

No problem - thanks for taking the time to leave such a detailed comment! I'll have to answer in kind.

I've been meaning to do a journal post about this. The story in this was secondary to the artwork, really. It's not that I haven't thought about it (as you'll see below), it's just it wasn't chosen with particular regard to the reaction of readers. Consequently, it's not to everyone's taste and I'm not surprised by your reaction! I'm more fussed about whether the artwork is up to scratch, and to that end I certainly appreciate your feedback.

You see, I've got a few animations to complete, and to make sure I'm doing it right, I tend to use static images for practice. Making comics out of them makes them more interesting for me to work on, as well as offering numerous advantages for testing ideas and potential workflows which will speed the animation process along and make it less frustrating.

People have been mentioning that I don't really upload stuff all that often, and I realise I do tend to keep things to myself. I'm going to try sharing a little more in the future, but it does mean that my content might be a teeny bit... variable... in taste. To complete it, it's got to entertain me first and foremost, or I won't get it done. And as you now know, I do like a bit of mindless toilet humour from time to time

I think it also comes down to how people interpret things on a personal level. I feel I left a lot up to the reader in this series - not entirely on purpose in some respects either (in my mind, I know what I meant, and don't need the additional context... but the reader doesn't, and that's easy to forget!). There's really very little actual crudeness there - it's merely suggestive. Reader's interpretations of the last frame in pt 3 took me by surprise, in fact - I thought I'd written something far more innocuous!

Similarly, Rarity's behaviour can either be regarded as angry and abusive... or angry and frustrated, and desperate to get back to work with her client. The way I imagined it in my head, was that Rarity was unable to let her little sister go through the day with her 'prankie-mark' on and suffering huge embarrassment (I had originally planned for SB to go for a proud stroll outside). So, already embarrassed in front of her client, she resolves the matter in the quickest way possible (with allowances for humour): by giving SB a stern dressing-down... and quick-wash so she can get straight back to work.

I wouldn't say that this series is a sign of things to come, if that concerns you. I certainly don't plan to publish artwork which contains abuse (unless it is somehow resolved in a satisfying way which gives the reader closure and leaves them happy). I want my stuff to evoke laughter/happiness/energy, not depression or misery... and as per the above, I didn't feel there was any abuse or deliberate meanness in this series. Of course, I only have my personal metric on what constitutes such negative content and what does not! It seems those who sat on the same side of the fence as I found this series to be enjoyable, and those who didn't did not. Quite the Marmite reaction, and it's proving very interesting!

Anyway, negative or no, what you left was what I consider to be good feedback. "I don't like it" or "it's crap" isn't nearly as helpful, and I'm grateful you shared some positive points too

Anyway, thus ends my hilariously long reply. I might copy this into a Journal in the near future!

After I posted my comment, I read a few of the other comments that you had responded to and was relieved that you had never intended for it to be taken as abusive in the least. You mentioned that her little trip through the washing machine hadn't harmed her at all and had simply been intended as a humorous way of quickly cleaning her (with cartoon logic applied of course; after all, I think we can assume that the CMCs being yanked into a taffy stretching machine would hardly be as harmless in real life as it was in the actual show). My critique then should not have been on the content of the comic (looking back on it, knowing what I do now, it really is pretty funny ^_^), but on how angry and irrational Rarity seemed to be being portrayed as. As flawlessly as you conveyed her emotions, I guess I just felt that they were the wrong set of emotions to fit the situation (which really just comes down to a difference of character interpretation [common among fan artist of all types]). Regardless, it truly reassures me to no end knowing that your goal is always to make people laugh and be happy with your art.

I am happy to hear that my original interpretation was a result of my own failure to feel the stories purpose rather than a result of your own intent. Lots of ridiculously talented artists seem to go to fairly dark places for little more reason than "their edgy" and with no truly artistic goals in mind (regrettably, my closest friend is one of them). In my mind, as a writer, a darker twist should serve the story rather than simply being dark for its own sake. One of the things that hurt the most, when I misinterpreted it, was the fact that you were so obviously good at what you were doing. Your art and vision with your expressions and body language are simply fantastic, but it takes more than that to write a comic (or any story for that matter). Conveyance is everything to a writer, but it sounds like this three part series was merely a stepping stone towards a bigger project judging from your response (either that or simply practice). Either way, I'm anxious to see what you have in store for the future.

By the way, I agree entirely that art is for the artist first and the viewer second. True art is not about giving people what they want; it is about making people want what you give them. An artist's first inspiration on any work should be their own heart. Otherwise, it's not really art at all.
Thank you for taking the time to read my opinions and even respond so satisfactorily to them (it's like pulling teeth to get some others to respond with more than a six word sentence); it means a lot to me and speaks volumes on your own character as an artist. I genuinely do hope to see your page updated more frequently in the future.

Absolutely. I was thinking after freaking Rarity out, SB would trot off into town, but on balance, I realised Rarity would not let her go without rectifying the situation, even if she had an important client to deal with.

And sure, she was angry, but she's not trying to be vindictive or anything. Sweetie Belle just caught her at a stressful time.

Yeah, Rarity does want what's best for Sweetie...and she was proud of her getting her cutie mark...until she realized what it was. Makes sense that she reacts the way she does, since I have a feeling that Rarity's raised Sweetie more than their parents have.

ParallaxMLP In reply to stevethepocket [2012-02-14 22:35:00 +0000 UTC]

I'm no typographer (is that the right word?), and the 'story' is definitely not for everyone, haha. I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment, especially regarding the artwork itself, which is my main concern for these!

Basically, I am churning out artwork for, more or less, practice for the kinds of animations and things I want to do later on. The specifics of what I'm investigating in each frame/scene and such are boring (though the glass in the washer door was one tangible thing). As you can probably see, the style of the art is changing subtly with each subsequent release!

Making a comic out of it simply gives me something more enticing/amusing to focus on rather than just flat/static images, and sometimes, they get to a stage where I think "sod it, I'll polish it off and release it", which is what has happened here

And all the expressions! Rarity's is the best. No! Sweetie in last panels. That was great. eyecreate89 said it best, great art, even took the time for shadows and what not and covered a mature theme without getting dirty.

Kudos. Hope to see more. I imagine Sweetie's revenge will backfire. Big time.
