Description
My religious views have changed a bit since this stamp . I'm really not flatly an atheist. I've looked at pantheism. I started reading Cloud Atlas and that got me thinking about reincarnation and what happens to the energy we have after we die. Hell, I've even thought we're just in The Matrix. I just don't know. What I do know is: science has actually give us answers and progress.[link]

Well I dunno. I've never understood how science can explain things like spirit. Imagination. Life itself. I don't see how anything could even work without something that created it. A computer doesn't appear in front of you, for example -- it was made. How does science explain the making of everything?
asdfgh I'm stupid and no good at trying to express opinions but I hope I'm making some sense.

But who invented science? Has it existed forever? How come Earth is the only planet in the Solar System that makes so much sense? I totally understand how you might rely on science for facts and truths but it doesn't seem to explain very much to me.

Earth is the only planet in the Solar System that makes so much sense because it's suited in the habitable zone of the Solar System. It's also called goldilocks zone. Not too hot nor too cold. It can substain life perfectly. I'm not saying other planets can't substain life (probably microscopic or bacteria), but intelligent life is very unlikely.
And, how do I explain it... Humans created the word science. Science doesn't exists, it's just a term, a word to explain things. Some kind of example would be gravity: We didn't created it or discovered it, but we know how it works. As you can see, science can't be invented, and it doesn't exist. We just apply it to see how things work. :>

What about the theories of the creation of the Solar System and the universe? They are all madly ridiculous, especially the Big Bang theory.

terukyu In reply to Tobassinesia [2014-01-21 16:29:59 +0000 UTC]
Well, those theories have been proven, and the bigbang theory does has its flaws but there is also an hypothesis that the universe originated from a 4D black hole or something. o.o We're really far away to tell exactly what happened back then.
But I guess in the end it's what we choose to believe and not a contest to see who's right.

I believe in both, I've met people and read stories showing things that can't be proved by science. So I can't bring myself to believe that there isn't some kind of higher power at work.

even though I'm atheist I'm happy when I see religious people willing to accept science. call me rude but religious people who ignore science are close-minded, they don't even give it a chance. I gave religion chance for the first 16 or 17 years of my life they could learn some really cool stuff like the big-bang theory or even evolution. I would be fine if they wanted to say 'creationist-evolution' which is god made the bacteria and it evolved on it's own.

I think most religious people are fine with science at large, they just don't like a couple of scientific findings that clash with what they feel is revealed truth.

People don't "believe" in science. Science is based on facts that can prove themselves.
Religion is only reliable through "faith".

GamziMakr In reply to QueenSmil3y [2013-11-28 17:58:47 +0000 UTC]
Not everything in science is empirical fact. If scientists say there is a 90% chance something about science is true, then you're assuming it is, even though you can't say you're 100% sure. That can be compared to having faith, but it's all just semantics from there.
Well, yeah. Why put faith in quotation marks? Are you implying it's not faith by which religion runs? X)

QueenSmil3y In reply to GamziMakr [2013-11-29 00:06:18 +0000 UTC]
Didn't say it was. That's why they study things instead of flat out saying "god did it".
Nah, I just put it in quotations because I put "believe" in quotations, so then it'd be fair X)

You generalized it. Very few things in this world can be empirically proven, something that we truly know. But I guess that's getting into philosophy right there.
That makes sense.

Ha ha ha, how cute.
It's funny because the Catholic Church is the reason the university system exists, were the only ones who provided higher education to women for quite some time, gave more financial aid and support to the study of astronomy than any other institute in existence, have been constant contributors to the field of medicine since ancient times, and scientific fields like genetics, chemistry, minerology, bacteriology, and atomic theory were, in at least part, founded by Catholic scientists. Pope John Paul II wrote that "Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth", which has been re-emphasized by the even more recent Pope Benedict XVI.
Why, it's almost like the 'religion hates science/reason' bit is mostly something atheists are playing up to make themselves feel superior!

That study said usually. Religion has NOTHING to do with logic. You have to think Spiritually and believe. Im sorry for commenting this but what you said was extremely rude and insulting so I had to speak my mind. Sorry to bother you.

I think science and religion are equal. They can build off of each other in great ways if people on both camps got over the whole "they're not compatible" argument. Science can provide or disprove statements of religious beliefs, and religion can provide a new viewpoint from which science can be used.
It's hard for many people to immediately separate the word "religion" from "Christianity," but there are many religions that have had at least the basics of modern scientific ideas long before they were proven. In essence, religion is a great creator of ideas that may lack sufficient proof. The goal of science is to test ideas. The two are not inseparable. A theory is very much like a religion until it is tested.
