Description
Final version of my epic Cybermen homage, now with kickass colors by the great Charlie Kirchoff [link] - star colorist for IDW's various Doctor Who titles.Oh, and Happy Halloween, by the way.
Line art and original comment thread here:
Special nods to Lee Sullivan and Adrian Salmon, as some of their work is heavily reffed here (the REAL TIME Cyberman and the symbol from DWM's "The Cybermen" comic, respectively), as well as the artist who depicted the SPARE PARTS Cyberman and horse for DWM 320 (he wasn't credited, but I'm pretty sure it's DWM regular Martin Geraghty), and of course all the brilliant designers who have contributed to the Cybermen's legacy over their 45 year history...

I dug it up in the actual mag, but lemme see if I can find it somewhere...
Ah- here's a scan in this thread here (and hey- someone built a toy of it): [link]
And yeah, if you're a fan of the Mk 1 versions, the Troughton comics have a lot to offer, as does the Adrian Salmon strip THE CYBERMEN from DWM in the early 90s. All good stuff.
And of course, the Mk 1's just popped up last month in the new season of 8th Doctor audios. There's no keeping them down.

I need The Silver Turk, but I was really disappointed with The Reaping. It barely had much Cybermen in it at all. I'm sick of the "we're dying out, so we're gonna hide and do things piecemeal" attitude towards writing Cyber stories. Why can't they invade in force like Earthshock, the Moonbase or the Invasion?

I know what ya mean- though there was LEGEND OF THE CYBERMEN, with that completely bonkers invasion of the Land of Fiction. But that was so odd I'm not sure it counts.

Now this is VERY nice. The only Cyberman missing, as far as I can see, is the Dark Dimension one (which isn't canon, of course). Anyway, incredible work from you and Charlie.
(and yeah, the Cyber-horse was designed by Martin Geraghty)

Thanks! And cool- glad to get a confirmation on who designed that- you WOULD know. I guess he's done so damn much work for DWM that at times they felt crediting him was redundant.
Yeah, other folks asked about the Dark Dimension one in the comment thread for the line art version of this. It basically boiled down to canonicity, like ya said (since I didn't want to include the Nelvana cartoon versions or the proposed McGann series "Cybs" either). Also, I've never been completely crazy about the DD design. They're kinda cool as an alternate universe HR Giger-esque take, but they look too over-the-top badass for a proper Cyberman (you can really tell it was designed in the 90s). The design's too "emotional", I think. Though ironically enough, I do have a plan for doing something that involves them down the road (as JNT would say, stay tuned)...
There's also Andrew Skilleter's "future" version that got left out, and a very weird Cybercontroller Ade Salmon designed for "Junkyard Demon II", as well as some other odds and ends. I didn't even TRY to include the Cyber Planners/Directors (I've never exactly understood what those things were anyway).

No, I'm completely with you on the Dark Dimension designs. It has that slight whiff of the producers trying to make Doctor Who feel "adult", which is always a mistake. It's fine for adult concepts to creep in of course, and I'm all for scaring the little kids senseless a la Hinchcliffe and Holmes, but this sort of pseudo-Freddy Krueger stuff doesn't fit with Who.
I do quite like the Cybs though. The idea of the Cybermen as scavengers, grafting whatever they can find onto themselves as they scour the cosmos, is quite pleasing. Shame they look like a terrible art school project about "ethnic diversity" though.

You know, it's funny how you mention Dark Dimension Cybermen appearing "alternate universe" considering the proposed plot of the film... Can only wonder if it would have somehow been acknowleged that way though.
I've always been under the impression that Cyber Planners were more or less designed to navigate and plan the actions of it's subordinates. They're not purely a hive mind, as we know Cybermen aren't exactly dunces on their own, but being more machine than man I can imagine them being organized and willingly acting as drones to a unit with higher processing power or tactical reasoning due to their desire for streamlined perfectedness. Come to think of it, it would make sense for advanced battle computers to be absent from the museum display, they're surely not as mass produced, their destruction is often a involved somewhere on the objectives of those whom woudld destroy them and they've kind of gone out of their way to preserve them before.
Speaking of which, this IS a museum right? I like the idea. "The stuff of nightmares, reduced to an exhibit." and all that... Though that Cybus variety seems to disagree. I am curious however, that you appear to include a Gallifreyan symbol on the display (the ever present seal of Rassilon it seems)... Considering how all the other images seem related to Cybermen incidents in someway, this has me curious... The only thing I can think of would be the unproduced "Six Doctors" but I get the feeling you're thinking of something else, could you tell me what this might be referring to?

I thought of her actually, b/c she's the only canonical "Cyberperson" to ever appear outside of Doctor Who (as far as I know, anyway). But at the end of the day, she's just a half-finished version of one of the models already on display. By that rationale I'd have to include Toberman and Lytton too.

Yeh it would get a bit silly. I never liked her look anyway, she looked a bit daft even by doctor who standerds. That and torchwood was a bit of a disappointment anyway.

I liked Torchwood (I say past tense, since they seem to have run it into the ground), but a lot of that was just the charisma of the cast. That first season was really rough (I actually stopped watching four eps in it and only came back a year later to give it a second chance). Season teo was a little more enjoyable. But "Children of Earth" was a hands-down masterpiece, and I'll knife-fight anyone who says otherwise. Too bad they immediately squandered that cred with Miracle Day (ick- just remembered that steaming mess)- it had promise, but man did it go wrong...

Yeh i watched the first episode thought it was trying too hard to be "adult" so i gave it a miss. Later on people told me it got much better. Later on I watched a bit of Miracle Day thought it was weak. So i always seem to walk into it at the wrong time.

"Children of Earth" is definitely worth your time- I dare say it's some of the best TV to come out of the "Whoniverse" since 2005. You probably aren't missing that much if you blow off the other seasons though.

Can you do something like this with the Daleks? There were also many different forms over the years.
I really like this.

PaulHanley In reply to asaziel [2011-11-01 00:40:54 +0000 UTC]
It's crossed my mind, but honestly there's just too many variants to make an interesting composition. Aside from the strange "specialty" ones (Saucer Commanders, Supremes, Emperors, Special Weapons, etc), the "basic" Dalek changed at least slightly in almost every single Classic era appearance. So for now I think stuff like that "Genesis of the Daleks" pic I just did will have to do. I might do some kind of mashup of different Dalek eras down the road, if I get a good enough idea, but since that's already sort of happened on TV (in Victory of the Daleks), I'd rather do other enemies first. I have ideas along the lines of this pic for the Sontarans, Silurians, and the Master, so those would probably be first.

I have the rough sketch of it already. Basically it incorporates all of Homo Reptilia's subspecies(including a few people may have forgotten about) in one scene from their history- plus the cool test design that the show's FX team made before Moffat and Chibnall unwisely vetoed it.

Oh, I've done an Achilleos pastiche with that version. It's been earmarked for a fanzine, so can't really post it here til they say. I'll mail it you
Will you be including the Sea Devils? Esp as Scales of Justice hybridised them? I'm in hog-heaven with your art, aren't I?? Lol

That sounds very cool- defintitely send that my way.
And puh-leez- hybrid Sea-Devils are SO obvious (but yes, they're in there too). There're at least two I'm putting in that are RIDICULOUSLY obscure (and yet I bet someone on Gallifrey Base will still ID them in minutes).
