Was this created from a model or your own perspective of the Amish/Mennonite culture you mentioned? Her face is imperfect yet realistic and to me reflects the Amish artform of having a fault in a piece of art to highlight that humans are not perfect. The colours and her gaze create a hypnotic characteristic that is calming to look at. I would happily display this painting on my wall at home. Very nice creation

Yes, this was created from a model. The Amish in our town do not make art of any kind except for quilts. No imagery, no mirrors etc. It is mighty cold here and they must have so much integrity to stay with the old ways. Great photos by the way, superb!

The model is fascinating and you've portrayed her well. My wife has a few Amish quilts and some dolls with bonnets and no faces that are displayed around the house, I don't know a great deal about the culture but I do find the style of art appealling. Thanks for the comment on my photos. If you decide to start a prints account I would purchase a print of this painting.

Thanks! I find that it is vital that the subject be lit quite dramatically to create the illlusion of depth. Most people start with an image/subject that is already flat, lighting wise, and then expect their painting to have depth.

Oh, I'm sure that you could paint like this. I went to Art school for 5 years before I found a studio that would actually teach painting as opposed to giving you "free" time to paint. Many of the methods that exist for teaching this have been thrown out in the last century. But if you can find a good classical studio!!
