Caravaggio-inspired? It looks very Italian Baroque with the strong, dramatic lighting and dark background. Nicely done.

Oh my! My fave DD for today!! I love the concept and how poetic it is... It's so true though. Humanity as it is now needs to view this.

Brillant. A drawing filled with a thousand word....

I could write pharagraphs based on this, but Im sure you have enough people commenting on your piece.

Bravo is all I can say!

It actually reminds of the riddle of the sphinx. "What walks on all four in the morning, and walks on two in the afternoon, then walks on three in the evening."

Very powerful.
The placement, and sense of depth is perfect. The use of shade brings the viewer first to the young child and then the man, who is more in the shadows. I just love the composition of this piece more than anything. Very dark colors, with the velvet read behind, bringing the figures out. I also love the smoothness of it.
Great job dude!

thanks so much. I think its important to make powerful artwork..something that leaves a residue. Like your poetry, it flows so well, I don't know why but your style reminds me of Charles Bukowski or Kerouak. Do you read these guys? Any beat writers on your list?

wow, so many thoughts in my mind. I don't think it is to scary, put in a big old frame, and hang it on a wide wall, with nothing else around it.

I don't know if I have this right but... is it how the kids seem to have the control now these days?
Parents have to carry out on their childrens every want and need, regardless of themselves. To be selfless as a parent these days is what is expected, regardless of the parent's state, it seems the child must be the only one cared for. Is it how kids never seem to realise just how well off they are these days, regardless of those around them, who may be worse off then them?

Mleh...
Anyways! I LOVE this picture, very very well excecuted, your technique is brilliant... Very smooth, I love it
you did a RADIANT job on the boy's facial feature, those can be so hard to get just right, but you did!
Bravo, There is no doubt you deserved this Daily Deviation!

I agree, and thanks so much for the nice compliments. These spoiled kids are going to wake up one day and find themselves fighting the next war. Nice drawings yourself. Have you tried painting?

TalonArana In reply to paulrichardjames [2007-02-07 22:16:13 +0000 UTC]

oh yes--
All of my stuff here, unfortuantaely, is so VERY VERY old. I've been drawing newer things and developing all of my characters to the point of them almost-being-real, some at least.
@___a I've had my share of realism drawing just lately, and I've painted some. But nothing fantastic, more scribble-painting if anything. Nothing compared to you XD
Thanks so much for the compliment though XD ~

The boy with the stick--did you use a reference from a magazine about birth defects related to alcohol (or something to that effect)? I swear I saw the same photo today...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

paulrichardjames In reply to naiadgirl1012 [2007-02-06 21:42:41 +0000 UTC]

that's funny you saw it today. Yep, I "appropriated" the image from somewhere, its not important to me. I liked the pose, and I like the way figures are repeated throughout art history and of course Warhol loved repeating imagery. The context is everything.

My version of trying to understand this , The man is straving because he does not eat anything the FDA ok with so he does not eat but this will not explain t he baby crying so the best quess is the baby is crying because his father is dieing of not eating anything ? ( Like poor people on the streets ? )

twiZted-piXie [2007-02-06 19:04:48 +0000 UTC]

Trying to interpret this only confuses me. What are you trying to get across. I love the unspoken relation between the boy and the starving man, but I can't seem to put it together. Lemme know! I like the concept...

paulrichardjames In reply to The-Rob [2007-02-06 20:00:52 +0000 UTC]

thanks so much. Of course the boy is responsible for the expression, but I was able to capture it, I guess. If you wanted to, really wanted to...you could paint like this. But as you know, photography can be just as strong a medium as painting.
