Description
The first map that I made for Neo Monsters. The first few maps I'll be uploading are pretty simple and small, but they'll get better as it goes on. This was originally made in December last year and I just recently got permission to release it, alongside the other maps I'll be uploading over the next few weeks.ΒLooking back at it now, it's a bit basic and there are a few things I would change if I did it again, but I still think it's pretty good for the small size. Let me know what you think.

I thought of giving you all five stars, but let's face it, it's hard to make a completely original route map most of the time. Outside that, I find this to be a rather nice route. The minimalistic use of flowers is rather nice- though I'd probably have liked one more somewhere- but I think your method was nice! The different types of trees blend nicely together, and the different ledges give a great texture to the land overall. I think the only thing that feels a little too much is the grass- personally, I think having some of it a little spotty might be nice. Or add another rock in it or something...There's just too much plain grass in big patches to me. Though...Considering nature, that might be a good thing, actually.

Thank you for the critique!Β
I agree that there should probably be one more flower. If I could go back I'd have put another at the top where that bit of long grass is. And you're right about there being too much grass as well. In the later maps that I'll be releasing I did start adding little gaps here and there to break it up a bit, but for this one it didn't even occur to me. It just shows how you improve over time.
But I'm glad you like the route overall! I used the different levels to break up the map a bit and make it more than just trees, so I'm glad you like those. I'll be releasing four more small maps like this, and then it'll be onto the bigger ones.

Vision:
I have given you 5 stars here because the setup resembles the variety of nature in real nature quite good.
Other newer games in this style have builded maps which are desolated like the old pokemon since they focus more on gameplay.
Originality:
I have given you 4 stars only because well it's not a new style for someone which isn't into this art genre.
Technique:
I have given you 5 stars because your technique is undoubtedly astonishing.
The variety of small props, the diffrent hue and form of trees make this world rly enjoyable to explore i guess.
Impact:
5/5 because i would like to see more of this world e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

Thank you so much for the critique, I really appreciate it! With this map, and the other maps that I'll be releasing from this same collection, I focused more on making it pleasing to look at rather than actually playable. So it allowed me to add a lot more detail into a small space, as I didn't have to worry so much about the player having trouble moving about.
I'm glad you've noticed and like all of the different little things I added to the map to try and make it look more interesting. That's actually one of the hardest parts to get right, as it can be tough to get the balance between variety and clutter right.Β
I have fourteen other maps waiting to upload made in a similar way to this, a lot of them much larger, so you'll definitely be seeing more from this world!

Nice!
Just one more thing, i think if u would add another tree type to this map it would increase the atmosphere even more.
That's what i liked back in warcraft 3 so much, the big variety of trees

Thank you for the advice, and I totally agree. Originally this map did have another type of tree, but the person commissioning them requested that I keep it to only one type. I think they wanted to keep it simpler, and I couldn't argue with the person paying me xD

A that's shit, well once i had to do a logo for a company.
I had an idea but they took it and morphed it into a crappy stupid looking thing that my eyes were bleeding.
I didn't say anything i was like well they pay me so who cares but after 1 year they changed their logo and payed another artist.
So i got the money yes but i was forced to do not my best and it didn't even stay somewhere in this world.
It's sad that we need to keep our mouth shut as long as we need money.
If this guy isn't a jerk maybe u should try to show him my critique (just not that part here xD ) and talk to him to make the game more beautiful.
I mean No Man's Sky has no real gameplay but everyone wants it because it looks good and interesting haha.

I totally understand that situation. They're paying you, a professional, to make a logo, but they still think that they know what's best and end up ruining it. Then once they get feedback on it they go to another artist instead, because obviously that other guy was at fault, and the poor feedback had nothing to do with their Frankenstein creation.. xD
I've actually been working with the company I made this for for about a year now, so it's a bit past the point where I think anything could be done. It's also a Japanese company, so it's a bit hard to communicate things like that. So far they've let me have almost complete creative freedom, so I think I'll keep my mouth shut for now xD

I've played Neo Monsters before; and I've never seen any of your maps there?
However, I've just compared it to to this image:

Did they choose a different tile artist? As thats exactly the same layout as the route you've posted.

Yeah, I just made the maps and then their tile artists made new tiles for them. Since it's made for iPhone it wouldn't really make much sense to have such low resolution tiles for it. They did use a few of the maps for advertising campaigns with the original tiles, though. I don't actually know if they've used any other maps but this one in the game itself, as I haven't got too far into it.Β

Ahh; thats a shame - I'm sure you could've made a higher resolution version.
Ahh I see.
You should see if there any other projects you could do

I probably could've done, but they already have employees to do that and we're being paid the same rate so it makes more sense on their end to do it internally.Β
I'm actually still working with the company behind Neo-Monsters, but I can't disclose what on at the moment. Of course I'm always open to more work if it comes my way xD

I see; it's probably just me - but I much prefer the nostalgic look of your tiles then the ones they went for.
Thats good though; I want first dibs when you can say something!

I really do as well, but at the same time the general public would probably just scream copyright thinking it was copying PokΓ©mon one-for-one.
I can't say how long it'll be, but of course!

More then likely :/ Still i'm sure there could be changes you could make to prevent that. Like more realistic trees.

I like it. Natural flow to it, not overdone. Boundaries are given due to the arbitrary nature of how "routes" are defined in these types of games. I like the placement of trees and overall direction you went with.
Well done.

Thank you! The tree placement is the main thing that I focus on in these maps. It really helps them to look interesting.Β
