Description Another 8 facts? Yes. This time Sara Nakamura won the poll, so here she is.

Additional facts:

While Saraswati is a Hindu goddess, she is also a guardian deity in Buddhism, so it's not that odd a choice of a name.

The Nakamura-za, founded in 1624, was an important kabuki theater in Edo period Japan (and still exists today). Presumably the ninja branch of the family emigrated to the United States at some point.

Burmese Pythons are apparently very laid back, and apparently make good pets, until they get big...

My intent is to have the tattoo on her back, although to date the only picture I've drawn of Sara from behind shows her bare backed with no tattoo. It's just a pencil sketch though, so we'll assume a finished illustration supersedes it when the time comes.

There's no mention of her job, because I haven't decided what I want her to do. So far, in the Oracle Sword, she seems to have a bunch of free time in the middle of the day.

This is the first time I've drawn her with her hair down. Like Alli, she does it up with chopsticks when dressed as  a ninja.

Excuse me for asking a woman her age, but how old is Sara?

She's two months older than Miyuki, which should also make her 22.

Most of the time, at least. It's a problem in that the characters don't age but have fixed birthdays, so if Miyuki is always 22, Sara would be 23 from February to April. Or they're both 22 all the time, and I never explain how that could be.

I guess it's good to hear that your girls don't age.

I think that's generally the case with many fictional characters; Batman is essentially the same age today as he was in 1939 (unless the writer wants to make a point about superheroes growing old, but even then he'll eventually go back to being the same age he was before).

There's any number of good reasons not to have the characters age, most notably that they would eventually become mature enough to settle down to jobs and families and stop doing interesting amusing things, and nobody wants that.

Agreed. Where's the fun in that?

So If I say Sara is more attractive than Miyuki, would I find myself alive in the morning?

Since they're both ninja I'd say that's a comparison you'd never want to enter into on either side, for safety reasons.

Sara is a sort of femme fatale character, so she's designed to be more pertty-attractive, while Miyuki is more cute-attractive, since she's the protagonist.

I've actually never been told what a femme fatal character is. Would you mind explaining?

It's sort of a mysterious, beautiful woman who uses her feminine wiles to seduce men to their doom. She's usually a villain, but doesn't have to be; either way she's out to get someone and goes for the indirect approach.

Since Sara has poisons as her specialty this makes more sense, (as opposed to Miyuki's direct approach of stabbing dudes in the face). That doesn't mean that she can't also stab dudes in the face, but sometimes that's not what you want (such as when the Abbot General tells Mr. Lau he could have killed Elliot Chow at any time and made it look like an accident. Of course he didn't because he wanted to make an example out of him. So he sent Miyuki to stab him in the face neck.)

I'm guessing she's American-born? AIUI Saraswati is Benzaiten or Benten in Japanese.

Yep. All the ninja characters we've met so far are American born - the thinking is that after Commodore Perry arrived in Japan in the nineteenth century, the shogunate realized they couldn't ignore the rest of the world anymore, and sent a group of ninja to the US to learn more about what was out there. Then the Meiji restoration happened and the mission pretty well ended, but the ninja families all stayed and made lives for themselves. (There's a pair of references in the Oracle Sword to one of Miyuki's ancestor's fighting in the American Civil War).

By the present day there are a number of ninja who aren't even of Japanese descent (Alli, Minh, and Armorer Greene who we've met so far, and Miyuki is half Hawaiian). The form of Buddhism they practice is a fictional mix of Japanese and Himalayan beliefs that is meant to represent a very old, esoteric form; I've gone with the Sanskrit names in many cases because I like how they sound, and also in Sara's case I named her before I decided her name should be short for anything.
