Description
Not to long ago I logged in and just so happened to catch the 44,444th pageview, and being a coincidence akin to the odometer rolling over I decided I should do something with it, especially since I didn't do anything Warhammer related for 40K as I had originally considered. For those who are unaware, the number 4 (the first character Akiko thinks of) is traditionally bad luck in both China and Japan, as it sounds like the word for death (the second character) when spoken. I talked to my guide about this at some length on the fourth floor of a pagoda in Nanjing, near Sun Yat-Sen's mausoleum, and both she and an uninvolved passerby pointed at the character carved in the floor and said "Shi" several times in a very satisfied manner. Not so unconcerned was a fellow who I rented a car to (when I worked at a car rental company, naturally) who refused the first car we assigned him because the license plate started and ended with the number four. Hospitals in Japan supposedly skip 4 when numbering floors (for practical reasons too, imagine the awkwardness when the nurse tells you they're taking you to death to run some tests); I didn't notice this in any building I was in in China, but the Confucian spirit requires that you persevere rationally, and give everything a number in the proper sequence.
So of course it stands to reason that 4 is Miyuki's lucky number, especially if she can use it to hallucinate red skeletons.
There, culture for everyone.

Thanks to everyone who's come to visit!
Enjoy,
~D

Also, Confucius' influence caused to not skip numbers, like some buildings do here in America.

I was confused for a minute, but then I remembered the deal with 4 in Japan.
Congrats!

Thanks!
It seems to get mentioned a lot in anime and kung fu movies and the like (also in travel guides to Japan, but oddly not China), but I figured I'd better write out an explanation, just in case.

Very informative, indeed.
I knew Japan shared some cultural history with China via trade routes before it resecluded itself in the 1400s (I think...?), but I didn't know that the same link existed in China too. I guess it's all in the kanji.

Awesome. Naturally my instant thought was that she noticed the number closing in on a round one, such as 45K, which meant you were going to do a 'special' pic. And was worried about what was going to occur.
Yours is awesome too.

She was afraid someone might stalk her in the hot springs with a camera, a 4, and a 5 (and another 0 from somewhere)?
That's actually a great idea for 50K...

You know the first thing I thought of when I saw that was the small film included in the extras on "The Grudge" DVD that was called "4444444444444" where the creepy little boy calls some woman on her cell phone. And then kills her! It was creepy!
So if your girl gets a phone call right now, for God's sake don't let her answer it!! Nice pic as usual and I love these little comic strips. Keep 'em up!

That kind of makes sense, wasn't The Grudge a remake of a Japanese movie, like The Ring was?
My original idea for the end was to have her hide at the top of a giant Buddha statue and refuse to come down until the number had gotten more lucky; if creepy ghost boys are about that would probably be a good idea.

Actually it was a remake of Ju-On and The Ring was a remake of Ringu. And the sketch I talked about came from the original Japanese version it was just included in the special features for The Grudge. Yes I probably know too much about this stuff but, meh, I like it.
That's definitely a good idea cause creepy little ghost boy who meows like a cat, you're about to die! And there's no except from it! Which is bullshit!
