Description We've gotten pretty severe rainstorms here for the past few days - lightning, thunder, breakers so high they shoot to a man's height over the sea wall, and rain, lots and lots of rain. Rain doesn't dissuade the ninja though, not when there's ninjain' what needs doin'.

Did this as a test to try a few things out. Ink drawing colored in Photoshop, ninja crime bulletin posters created separately in Photoshop and composited in. And yes, one's in Spanish and one's in Chinese (with an English header), although they're really too small to tell.

Enjoy,
~D

She might become too wet to do any ninja stuff.

Nice job. I wouldn't mind seeing the full-sizes either.

Varrah naaice!

I didn't recognize as many as kelayans, but neat idea to use old art to make the bulletins.

I really think the darker than usual shading works great for this rain storm setting.

Thanks!

When the storm blew in yesterday it caused (among other things) the streetlights to go on at about 2 in the afternoon, that's how dark the clouds were. So I figured it ought to be dark, whether this is supposed to be during the day or night (presumably there's an electric light of some kind just above that bright spot).

LOVE IT! Very intense look in her eyes, and you captured the rain exceptionally well.

Just because I am extremely weird. (And I am not looking at your gallery, I'm really going from memory) your police bulletin pictures are (from right to left)

South Tower
Granite Halo
Remote Control Thief
Office Ninja and
Five-O.

I think that's right... not actually sure on Granite Halo's title though. Like I said, I'm weird.

Yup, it's Granite Halo. The one where she's upside down is actually taken from the Saint Patrick's Day comic, although it's the exact same pose; she's even reaching with the same arm.

I was thinking I should post the posters separately, but they don't have any new content, just text (although the images have been filtered to look like grainy security footage).

Well, I came close to nailing them. Off by one. I don't think you need to submit the posters separately, because like you said, nothing really new save for the text and filter to the images. They do add an extra level of interest to this pic however, didn't know Miyuki was wanted by so many different countries.

They're all from crimes in San Francisco - they don't know who she is, of course, the description is very generally for "a female ninja, between 5'2" and 5'6", between 100-120 lbs."

I probably should post large copies, just since I went to the trouble to put real text in them; if I can get them all into one with some original art added it might be worth it.

Well as vague as the description may be, I can't help but think that purple hair might make her stand out a bit.

Odd thing, no one seems to have noticed. Maybe it looks different in the dark, or they have their eyes on the swords the whole time...

kelayans In reply to penguin-commando [2010-01-21 05:01:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, my eyes would be focused on the 'swords' It probably is the dark, being a ninja, she'd be averse to doing any ninja-y stuff in broad daylight, at least the kind of ninja-y stuff that the cops would be interested in. Her hair could then be red, or brown, or black, or dark blue.. or of course purple. Better to post what you know for sure, than to make a guess.

[link] - as you can see, the surveillance images are mostly not in color, and the victims can be implied to be people who have little interest in helping the police.

Of course those same people might go looking for purple-haired girls to get revenge, but then comic book folks never figured out that Clark Kent was actually Superman...

Great work here, I retract any skepticism that might have been present in my previous comments. Not only are these great, but I was considering Granite Halo as the closing scene for Miyuki- The Golden Gate, and the event you described could be a perfect way to end the story.

Yeah, just because they tell the police that they don't remember any details of their assailant, doesn't mean that they won't use what they remember to get their own brand of justice. And of course, you are correct with the Clark Kent/Superman mess. Do glasses and a business suit really make that much of a difference?

I don't know that a fight with a few (implied) mobsters would really be all that climactic necessarily, (of course as the author it's up to you). I really thought these up as sort of typical things she might be up to - kind of a jumping off point, really (although the Spanish one ends in a warehouse explosion).

I originally based the church in Granite Halo Old St. Mary's in Chinatown - brick buildings don't do well in earthquakes, so large brick churches are rare now, although for the poster I figured it would fit better with a historically Italian neighborhood. Of course there is the more imposing high Gothic Grace Cathedral as well.

I think DC eventually came up with a justification for Superman having some sort of psychic ability to confuse people into not noticing he was Clark Kent, but I always thought the original reasoning was best - Clark has such a quiet, retiring personality that no one thinks he could be Superman, to the extent that they begin believe he looks physically different. Alternately, it could be a ninja mind trick.

Well, since I have no intention of killing your character, you can assume that Miyuki will survive to the end of the story. The 'tentative' ending is just her, in the position in Granite Halo, looking at a kid in an apartment complex across the street who happens to have seen her. She presses her finger to her lips, he nods, and she launches herself off her perch, and down into the 'fray' as it were. End Story. The fight that inevitably follows is simply implied, not described.

Thanks for the pictures, but of the two I think I like Old St. Mary's better. And it's location would make the scene work really well.

I agree with you about the Superman thing. I like it better that it's just the clash of personality that discourages people making the connection. Superman is not psychic... but you know, he could be a ninja, he did wear black on several occasions.

Well yeah, I didn't think you would, just that a fight with mooks may be anticlimactic; although having given it some thought it's much like the end of Batman Begins, where having stopped Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul he begins again, starting his investigation of the joker right as the movie finishes.

Superman might well be a ninja; his good friend Batman definitely is, as we have seen. In the Wiki article about Ninja disguise practices - [link] the editor makes the point that a ninja is able to impersonate different classes and occupations successfully because he has studied a form of sociology - dressing like them isn't enough, bit's the ability to move, act and talk like them that seals the deal (actually, we've seen Batman do this too, I think). Certainly a more interesting idea than Superman being psychic.

Yeah, and that is kind of the idea I was going with. Just like Truth Be Told, I am going to put the lot of them through hell in the course of the story. The ending is kind of a... And The Adventure Continues. You know, like how they end a cartoon series with a clear idea that it's not really the end for them. Teen Titan's and Kim Possible being more recent examples of this.

It is kind of a necessary skill for a superhero to learn how to go unnoticed, if for no other reason than the fact that all the heroes seem to loathe the idea of their enemies finding out about their secret identity. So, if you base it entirely on that, aren't they all ninjas?

penguin-commando In reply to kelayans [2010-01-24 04:17:27 +0000 UTC]

Most of them do have a secret identity, but Batman's the only one I can think of who would disguise himself as other people, mostly to spy, but also to set up ambushes. Of course Miyuki's beat disguise so far was as Clarissa, and her ambush disguise was herself, but naked...

kelayans In reply to penguin-commando [2010-01-24 05:29:40 +0000 UTC]

Well you got me on the Batman thing. As for Miyuki, well, her disguise was more for fun than any sort of espionage, and her Ambush is a proven technique.

There was a group of guys who would rob banks naked. No one in the bank could give an accurate description because they were, shall we say, distracted. Whoever Miyuki was ambushing, if they lived, would never be able to describe her to the police.

Not sure where I heard that, but I heard it recently so I thought I'd share.
