Description
I did the original pencils for this sometime last year I think, but I only colored it now. I decided to color over the pencils directly, in part because it would be a pain to ink it all, in part because I usually don't revisit things, and once I started inking I'd start repencilling as well. This is just a sample of the weapons, surveillance, survival and evasion equipment that Miyuki uses out shaking her ninja thing (whatever that means). I'll come back and list all the stuff later; not pictured are mission specific items (like disguises) very large items (vehicles) and very small items (electronic bugs, poisons and the like).
A girl could have a good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.
Enjoy,
~D

She wouldn't carry all of it at once, but you'd want to have the right tools for the job close at hand. All of this could fit in the trunk of a car, although you wouldn't want the cops looking back there if they pulled you over.

Dah, that's true. Still... If you compare the archaic tools of the old ninja to the modern weaponry and tech of the present day in terms of usefulness for a mission... Well, there really isn't much contest. For instance, I don't see why you'd pack two different sets of smoke grenades when one is superior... But I'm reading too deep into it. XP
Kudos on giving ninja guns! More power to historical accuracy. ^ ^

That's the march of progress. The advantage the traditional weapons have is that they were all designed to be manufactured in preindustrial times, so if you knew how, you could manufacture your own with minimal tools. But then a lot of the advantage is that modern defensive systems have moved on as well. The traditional smoke bombs usually have a ceramic casing to ensure they'd burst when thrown, but that also means they could pass through a metal detector undetected. Kevlar body armor actually won't stop knives or swords (although the plate inserts will). It just takes some creative thinking.
At the same time, you don't get to be one of the world's most renowned band of assassins by ignoring the most efficient tools of the trade. This was fun to do, I should do an updated version sometime.

It's never a bad time for tea.
And if she's out in the wilderness, boiling water for tea is much safer than drinking it straight from the source. I think I figured originally that she could carry an emergency stash of rice or miso or similar that's portable when dry, but needs hot water to be edible.
I should probably draw an updated version of this, seeing as it's almost 10 years old now. Would still include the teapot.

In the trunk of her car?
I don't expect she would carry all of it at once; some of these things do the same things as others, but one or the other would be a better choice, depending on the circumstances.

MisterStolas [2010-10-09 13:13:41 +0000 UTC]
yea u have a point. ninja/Assassin's are all about stealth. using a weapon that went bang would neutralize the effect and send every guard there. also from several presidential assassination's i've read up about almost all of them were either caught or killed. one of the 1st ones simply ran up to him in the crowd and emptied the gun to his chest. of course immediately he was ambushed by at least 10 bodyguards, and prolly even executed later. guns imo for ninja's should be a last resort, meaning if nothing else works, fire the gun and get out of there fast, unless you wanna be hung.
thats just my opinion.

Most of the presidential assassins were either deranged or political zealots of some kind, and intended to get caught so everyone would know why they did it - probably not the best examples but even so, John Wilkes Booth (who made a point to show the crowd at Ford's Theater who he was) managed to escape for 12 days before the army shot him, and Lee Harvey Oswald successfully fled the scene and could have gotten much further if he had had any sort of escape plan (as it is, he later killed a policeman during a traffic stop, and they caught him later in a movie theater).
Then again, no presidential assassin has ever been a professional; professional assasinations don't make the press that often, but in the past few years there was the Russian fellow killed in London (Polonium poisoning, it was meant to be obvious who did it) and the Hamas guy in Dubai (tazed and then drugged, to make it look like an accident). Then again Anna Politkovskaya was shot in an elevator in Moscow and Gerald Bull, architect of the Iraqi Supergun, was shot five times while leaving his apartment - in both cases the assassinations were undertaken by government operatives and in both the assassin disappeared without a trace and without alerting the building's security guards.
And that's where the suppressors come in - compare the regular MP5 with the silenced SD version (which I have given her here) [link] with subsonic ammo all you hear is the bolt clicking back and forth.
Also, the circumstances matter - if you want to get at a guy while he's driving (or a passenger in a car) you'd need him to stop and probably get out before you can stab him. Maybe he has a house that's guarded like a fortress, but he likes to walk on the balcony, or he his office building is similarly guarded but his desk has a view out of some large windows.
Certainly it's not the best option all of the time, but it will be some of the time.

Every successful presidential assassin (and all the failed ones I'm aware of) have used guns, but that's probably a cultural thing - guns are easy to get ahold of and are effective with almost no training, and none of them were professionals. Other than Lee Harvey Oswald I don't think any of them even had any real training. Gavrilo Princip used a gun to kill Archduke Franz Ferdinand (which started WW1) but that was only after a bomb had failed to kill him earlier that day.
Of course you don't really see ninja using firearms - the guns they had in Japan up to the 1800s were mostly matchlocks - big, loud and unreliable, and of course you have to keep the match burning and the powder dry. And they would be hard to come by, and incriminating if found in your possession, and so on. And once again it's partly cultural; private citizens can't own guns in Japan, and there's a cultural notion of swords being the superior weapon that goes back to the early 20th century as well.
Looking back, I think I've drawn her actually using a gun just once, and that was against a zombie horde.

A number of people have asked about firearms; one of the original 18 disciplines of ninjutsu is kayakujutsu, the use of firearms, gunpowder, and explosives (mostly bombs and pyrotechnics ,since they supposedly came up with all of this in the 1300s and guns didn't make it to Japan for another 200 years). My thinking here was really that she shouldn't limit herself from any means that was effective - especially since modern firearms can be silenced to a degree.
Or, to put it another way, she shouldn't bring a knife to a gunfight.

Too true, too true.
Not to mention poorly chosen.
A P-90? sure, it's fast, but it's loud. Too loud for any self respecting ninja. Besides, why shoot him when you can poison him? The only gun that actually deserves to be up there is the Sniper Rifle, and even then it's if-y.
It is a nice pic though.

They're all real world weapons, that have been used, are used, or are replicas of what is thought to have been used - I just collected here what seemed like a useful range. If you google the items from the description (it's on the first page of comments) you can find photo references of everything pretty easily.
