I always think of Michelle Rodriguez as her character in Resident Evil, that was probably the first movie I saw where she had a major role... also her character would have been a better protagonist for the series than Milla Jovovich, but, well, there's no saving it now.

It's really a coincidence, though, since in my original notes she was named "Lyta Ramirez". I don't remember why I changed it, since neither surname has a particular significance as far as her character is concerned.

Thats cool. I liked Res Evil, Milla was awesome. I did not really notice Rodriquez until Avatar, then went back and seen her in several other movies. I will now look at your character with Rodriquez in mind. ha ha keep up the good work!

I think it would take the form of softer S's, different syllable stresses, the occasional rolled R and the curious collapse of different vowels into a single sound. I don't know how you would represent it in writing, though, since it wouldn't be enough to change the spelling of a word - things like the silent H and ll/y pronunciations probably wouldn't happen, since she would speak before she could read, of course. She would make full use of Mexican slang, however - [link] about 2/3 of the way down, I've heard many of these among my coworkers (always classy, those guys) and others, so it would seem accurate enough.

Interestingly enough - [link] and [link] - some of these are very common and some I have never heard at all. Keep in mind Miyuki is from NorCal, Lyta is from SoCal, and Clarissa is from Massachusetts, which has it's own wacky slang (and accent). Also, we have seen Lyta use military slang, which other characters largely won't understand.

I may well have to do these for the others, just out of a sense of completeness; tagged me for Lyta, though, which is good, I think, because we (the public) really know more about the other two. In any event, I want to try to get a Christmas pin up done before the weekend, so it'll be after that.

Well for example, in regards to the Mexican verbage, I have a story that features a prominent Russian character that slips into Russian when placed under duress. The story features these phrases most prominently... Ya Zanya- I’m Busy, Nyet- No, Pozhalujsta- Please, Spasiba- Thank You, and Da- Yes. So, I was kind of thinking along those lines for Lyta, saying something completely in Spanish because she's to frustrated to think clearly... or doesn't feel that the American translation does enough to convey her level of frustration. Or at least, that was the idea.

I imagine she curses a lot in Spanish, largely because it sails under the radar with authority figures... well you can tell profanity by the tone of voice, but the severity of it would be lost on teachers or senior officers that managed to hear her (Mexican profanity is especially powerful). Also, she will have learned to swear from her peers and her parents (as one does) and so it would be in Spanish.

I'm mostly working on what I experienced with friends and classmates growing up - a lot of them were the first generation born in the US, and usually spoke American English, but every now and again there'd be a word that they'd learned very early from parents who primarily spoke Cantonese. My high school Principal, for example, spoke very standard English, but was famously incapable of saying the word "School" correctly (a word he sadly had to say quite often). I think his first language was actually Mandarin; I don't believe Chinese has any words that end with an L sound, and "school" is a word he would have learned early.

Of course Chinese and Spanish are nothing alike, I guess the thing to keep in mind is that she does most of her thinking in English, and work from there.

Lyta will be speaking and thinking primarily in English, but there are a couple of scenes that I have in mind where she might let slip a few choice words. Without giving anything away, let's just go with an optimizer. Situations that are somehow related to Hale might cause her to address the situation or Hale himself with such phrases as...

"Hijo de Puta" Son of a Bitch.
"Meirda" Shit or "Meirda Santo" Holy Shit.
"Pendejo" Jackass.

Just to list a few. I will not be going any deeper into the vulgar phrases available simply because there are some words or phrases I won't say even in English. But I can see all of these making it into the course of the story. Just like the other stories I write, I add swearing only when the scene is intense enough to warrant it.

She's only not fond of her Quinceanara photo... she's kind of a tomboy and those are pretty much the girliest dresses ever. The others she likes, so she probably has them displayed at home or at her office - somewhere she spends a lot of time.

I had had the idea some time ago of a comic where Miyuki would want to get a copy of Lyta's Quinceanara photo from either her parents or older brother, but I never decided what she would then do with it (mischief, obviously, but what I never decided). Anyway, the notion that she doesn't like that photo remains.
