I always thought it was because she liked the feel of the carpets (I think there was this pile of carpet because they just came back from the cleaners).
But below has a few other explanations and they sound plausible.

I'm sure that's so. However, we have also observed that most cats adore carpets! Any and all types are good - persian wool, chinese wool, indian silk, chinese silk. A couple of cats even use the wool carpets like scratching pads! Needless to say, our carpets are showing bald patches from years of having the threads ripped out by sharp claws!!!
