There are settings for the dodge and burn tools. Hilight, midtones and shadows. Which one are our using. Also, there's exposure, which is how strong they are. Which ones?

well, it's all on midtones... I use different exposures, mostly start with a low one and continue with higher exposure ^^ Depends on how you like it and how many structures you'd like to have

It might help if u increase the hardness of the burn/dodge brush + decreasing the size of the brush. will make it seem more like bark. [link]
