Description
The Razorback is an armored personnel carrier (APC) used primarily by Legiones Astartes and other Imperial adepta like the Orders Metallic and the Adeptus Arbites. The basic Rhino has some of its troop-carrying capacity sacrificed to add a top-mounted weapon system. The Razorback’s top-mounted weapon is remote-controlled from inside the vehicle and can be equipped with several weapon types, such as a twin-linked Heavy Bolter or a twin-linked Lascannon.
In contrast to the Rhino, which is unarmed or armed with only a Storm Bolter, the Razorback’s weapon system allows it to serve as heavy fire support after it has deployed its troops. Because of the wide range of weapons that can be equipped on the Razorback’s remote-controlled system, it can be deployed against targets ranging from light infantry to heavy armor.
There are older models of the Razorback that use a crew-served weapon system. The remote-controlled turret uses the same logic engine (cogitator) found on the Land Raider and can provide a rapid and efficient threat response that reduces the crew to only one. Although, a second crew member can still be employed.
According to standard Astartes battle doctrine, Razorbacks should be used as fire support vehicles, accompanying Rhinos or infantry squads into the thick of battle. A Razorback assigned as an escort can increase the effectiveness of a strike. Impressed by the armored fighting vehicle’s versatility, however, several Legions field the Razorback in other roles, employing them as mobile command centers and heavy reconnaissance screens.
History
As the Great Crusade wore on, it became self-evident to the senior commanders of Space Marine Legions that the Rhino APC had limitations, its lack of firepower. Initially, the solution was to pair the Rhino with the Predator tank or its close support variant, the Predator Infernus. However, these were half measures. The gap between the Rhino and Predator was filled by the Razorback 60 years after the Great Crusade started.
Some Legion commanders are wary of using the Razorback. In their eyes, it is a failure both as a transport and as a battle tank. This is because it lacks the capability of transporting troops and the firepower and armor of dedicated vehicles. Other commanders find it useful in several roles. The Razorback protects squads operating to support armored attacks by Land Raiders. Secondly, it is used in a heavy reconnaissance role, supporting Astartes Bike Squads or Attack Bikes. The bike squads launch lightning strikes ahead of a main Space Marine force.
Armament
The Razorback holds the title for the Space Marine vehicle with the most weapons. There are several weapon load-outs that a single Space Marine Legion has used and then spread to many more. Twin-linked Heavy Bolters and Twin-linked Lascannons are the most common weapons used by the Razorback. The Razorback can also be equipped with Twin-linked Heavy Flamers, Twin-linked Multi-Meltas, or a single Multi-Melta.
The Dawn Angels Space Marine Legion uses several variants only fielded by their Legion, like the twin-linked Assault Cannons and a Flamestorm Cannon. Dawn Angels even have a unique Rhino chassis design known as the “Lucifer Pattern,” which replaces the vehicle’s engines with overpowered ones, allowing it to move faster while in combat.
To fight daemons and psykers, Silver Knights and Silver Order of the Orders Metallic use Vortimer Pattern Razorbacks equipped with twin-linked Psycannons.
Razorback can also be outfitted with a Hunter-Killer Missile Launcher, Extra Armour Plating, a Pintle-mounted Storm Bolter, ram spikes, or a Dozer Blade, a searchlight, and Smoke Launchers.
