Description

The Granite Ground-Launched Cruise Missile Complex (GGLCMC) was a mobile, ground-to-ground cruise missile system developed to give 11th legion commanders a reliable tactical nuclear missile. Its sophisticated guidance system allowed it to penetrate enemy territory at low altitudes and high subsonic speeds.

The basic unit of the GGLCMC is a battery of four transporter erector launchers (TEL), each carrying six Type 55G cruise missiles in their containers ready for launch. Two launch control centers (LCC), each with two launch officers, are connected to the TELs and are interconnected for launch. The battery also has 16 support vehicles for the battery commander, 19 maintenance technicians, an apothecary, and 44 as security personnel.

Four batteries made up a Tactical Missile Regiment (TMR) of 20 vehicles. Each TMR controlled each GGLCMC handled the operation and deployment of the missiles; and a Tactical Missile Maintenance Squadron (TMMS), handled the support of the system.

The missiles were launched from an elevated launcher, with the missile ejected from its canister for about 13 seconds of solid rocket booster flight. The fins extended in 4 seconds, the engine and wings deployed at 10 seconds, and the jet engine started at the end of the boost phase. Flying at a low level, the cruise missile uses a mixture of internal guidance with doppler radar/terrain map updates that guide the missile to the target.
