Description
Just returned from a short few days exploring the alabama hills, mono lake, and even a stop in death valley. My goal was to get some night photography done, and luckily I was able to get right to it upon arriving at this location. What you see here is the milky way galaxy rising across mobius arch as a small crescent moon begins to rise (the glow on the left).Alabama hills- Lone Pine, California.

do you have an astrophotography camera because i can not figure out how to get the stars like that on my camera. (which is not an astrophotography camera.)

I just use a canon 7d. Not specifically designed for astrophotography, but I also used a lens with a fast aperture of 2.8. What camera are you using now and what lens?

The 18-55 lens usually will not work very well for night shots. One thing you also have to consider is getting very far away from any city or towns. You will have a better chance at viewing the milky way and the skies will be much much darker.

Amazing job getting the Milky Way in there. I'm a bit surprised, considering you have the moon so close in the sky.

Thank you. With the high ISO speed and long exposure I was able to capture the moon just cresting over the boulders.

viewing on your website really enhanced the photo and revealed a better lighting. the first thing i noticed with this photo was that the texture of the rock matches that of the stars, in a moonlit graininess.. very cool.

Thank you I appreciate it! I've always felt photos look best against dark colors to achieve maximum effect. The graininess is also due to the noise from the high ISO speed.

really nice perspective of the arch..a fabulous composition! the high ISO worked great for the sky but did make it a little too noisy in the rock textures in my opinion. but still a stellar capture

Thank you! There is always some noise when using such high ISO speeds, but for this type of shot, the noise sometimes adds texture to the rocks as the details are very fine and when printed the noise would be less apparent and look more like sharpened artifacts.

Amazing! It's almost as if night never existed. You must have waited for a long time to get this shot?

Thank you! After driving for eight hours to this destination, I hiked out to the arch as it was still dark (about an hour and a half before sunrise) and shot a few frames to kill time before heading to find a campsite. I suppose you could say I waited a long time lol.
