Description
I wanted to try a different thicker painting style for the background-- I guess it came out ok. I'm not too happy with the piece as a whole, though. I started to get my positive and negative space mixed up and then it got muddy.I try to steer away from cliche vampire poses, but this is literally the only moment these two have with each other before the sire disappears. He likes to travel the world causing trouble. Here's the beginning of the fledgling's troubles.

pretty cool, a little too much blending-couldn't tell if it was wings or hair or both holding the two of them. but great idea. I still like it.

Thanks! I wanted it to be able to go either way, but next time I'll try to convey it better.

I think that there are no "cliche" poses when it comes to those creatures (or there are very few of them),
and even not knowing their history I think this pic is great - the flow of hair fabric adds very much to it.
I think that it would be very interesting to see a different version of this - I mean something with more tones of
dark navy blue and lighter shades of blue - like what one sees in the dark of the night, when the moon
is the only light source (it's just something that came to my mind upon seeing your work ).
Other than that I can only try to stop my nose from bleeding

I love the composition of this piece! It's a lot more unique then the typical "Vampire changing a human into a vampire" scene. The dark textured background is really cool and it helps make the vampire's wings stand out a little more too! I don't think it looks "muddy" at all, it looks very flowy and awesome like all your other pieces! Nice job! (I'm also curious about the story behind this piece!)

It was just a bite and run kinda deal. XD I can tell ya, that fledgling is a little bit bitter about it.

THIS. IS. PERFECT. The background is deep and beautifully textured, the skin is textured more with pen than paint so that it contrasts well, the wings are less full of value contrasts but that works to make a stronger center shape, the hair is full, well-shaped and more smoothly blended than the rest for a GREAT contrast, the expressions in the bodies/faces is VERY strong and the anatomy is the best it has EVER. BEEN. I absolutely love this, I am not kidding. AMAZING.

Not MTAC as far as I know. I could look into it though.

I love the subtle bluish colouring in the vampire's skin...what did you use for those thin white lines in his hair? Is that your fancy schmancy white ink pen thing?
The cape still reminds me of a flower unfurling its petals, though I think I may have gotten that idea from the title.
Man, the anatomy looks so spot-on. I MUST start using more of those photo references for anatomy... I've overcome the giant hand issue but I keep making my heads too big X'D

Yep. I love my fancy posh magik white gel pen. I will forever be grateful to Joji for alerting me to their existence.
In hindsight, the sire's main power from the Dark Gift is shapeshifting so the organicness of the cape is appropriate.
I think it has just as much to do with practising anatomy as actually using references for finished pieces. Whenever I feel blocked or don't know what to draw, I go and draw pages of photo-referenced nudes. Understanding anatomy and referencing anatomy are two different things, I've discovered.

Narghhhh YOUR WORK IS SO BEAUTIFUL
I don't think it looks muddy at all, actually. I like the monochromatic-ness a lot. And the slight textures in the background. And just everything.
That hair.

I think it looks muddy... or maybe just confused. Towards the end that whole negative and positive space stuff started to get so confused.
You like the hair? The picture is full of things I usually don't do. I usually ink black hair... but I wanted to experiment.
I guess this picture is pretty much like Frankestein's monster in that respect.

Well, I'm a negative- and positive-space noob, so in my uneducatedness, I think it looks fantastic. And since I saw the uncolored lineart, the colored version looks that much cooler to me.
And for the record, yes; that hair is just incredible. Experimentation isn't all bad! Frankenstein's monster needs love, too. :3

You always think that though. Only thing that even remotely bugs me is the melty looking wing. But you already addressed that you started "mixing up" positive and negative space. I assume somewhere around the wing that you decided to make stretch upward?
It's just a really beautiful piece. I love the pose...even if it is a little cliche.

PhantomSeptember In reply to COBRD-Ind [2012-10-17 15:38:47 +0000 UTC]
Yeah... but only because I can see all the tiny flaws of the piece. I'll keep in mind the melty looking wing for next time.
Yeah, from the beginning I thought the piece needed a little more weight at the top, so I drew one of the wings flowing up that direction.
I'm glad people seem to like it in spite of the slight cliche-ness.
