I've never been good at shading in GIMP or Photoshop or any kind of digital art before, and I even own a tablet peripheral to make the job easier. My question is do you burn and dodge directly on the separate layers of flat colors, and if so what size brushes do you use to get all the nooks & crannies?

This was wonderful, it helped me make peace with the wand tool at least xDD No other tutorial taught me how to use the 'grow' option which is what I've really been needing since I make lines the same way you do. Thaaaaank you!

I don't think it's working for me. I can't seem to expand the image, and all I see is the "Cell Shading and Soft Shading in GIMP" small picture you have for it.

lets say i do shading with the burn and dodge tool...i have my skin layer...it seems like u said to use a seprate layer for shading...is that right!? cause I have tried it before and it doesnt work...it only works on the skin layer...tell me if i am wrong here and if u do use another layer how do u shade on a transperant layer if it is only working on the skin layer for me...damn my words suck haha

pheona In reply to Treavoracious [2011-05-08 15:31:00 +0000 UTC]
When using the dodge/burn tool, you need to have the base color to dodge or burn... if that makes sense. So yes, use the colored layer, not a separate layer. I usually do not make a separate shading layer
