Description
A little more "realistic" than some of the other Concept Art and Illustration I post here, this is another painting for the book project. For this one, instead of having a million things going on in the scene I wanted it to appear peaceful and atmospheric. I hope you likeand if there was ever a painting of mine to look at large this is the one...so please do
Phil

Peaceful and atmospheric it is, my good person, and the detail on the mountains and foliage is just astounding. It probably won't be so peaceful when that storm that looks to be brewing starts though

Amazing work, beautiful. I've just noticed something I don't know if it was on purpose or not but the mountain on the left looks like it's overlapping the hills?? It is slightly transparant so not noticable at first. I hope you get what I mean just looks a bit odd that's all.

Wow Phil - is this all painted or is this a matte painting with photo textures?
Eitherway it's totally beautiful and atmospheric.

Thanks! It is actually a 3d/2d combination with some texture applied at the 3D stage...ala matte painting style. But, you know me...I have to add my little rich and saturated color touches here and there in the 2D stages. This is an approach I use quite a bit at EA but it hasn't really found it to my personal work yet. Once I get NDA's clear there will be a whole bunch more work up on my site in this more realistic style.
I hope all is well

Imo, it doesn't really matter how it was made at the end. It's very atmospheric
Yup, all is well. Having interesting projects going on (if they come through) and being quite busy with websites and painting and tutorials.
You still need an avatar though, mister!

Oh my God, this is magnificent... every single detail appears to have been done so meticulously; from the blades of grass to the leaves on the trees and the texture of the mountains... wow. This my friend, is what I'd call a masterpiece! Simply astounding.

A "little" more realistic? That's an understatement.

Your unique palette, talent and style + a hint of the Cumberland School + an echo of Maxfield Parrish = one drop dead gorgeous painting. Not to mention soppy keyboards and monitors form slobbering fans, and extremely gushy comments (mine included).
Nice job, Phil, I like it very much. Thanks for posting.

I just truly and fully hope that you are paid well for such beautiful work - that you put it up here without worry of ripping is amazing to me - this is such high quality stuff. Do you have some link for a bio of some sort? I'd love to know how you learned and where you went to school, etc. Just awe inspiring.

Thanks so much....really glad you like the work. I DO worry about people ripping my work off and they have actually done so on this very site. That said, I think you can't be afraid to show your work or else no-one will ever see it When the artowrk is ripped off and used for profit I have gone after the guilty parties quite aggressively.
Here is a bit more info on me...thanks for your interest.

Thank you so much for the links, I have just read through the first page, and I couldn't want to come back and comment
When I read that Michael Whelan was an inspiration a huge grin came over my face. He is probably one of the key influences for me, but I am embarassingly new to all of this.
I just basically wanted to ask you this - is it too late for me? I'm 32 and just starting out. I can't devote 24/7 to this with my family coming first. and I won't lie, I feel a little overwhelmed. But, this feels like the first steps of the right path for me, finally, even this late in life - does that make sense? It just feels like at long last I found my road.
In regards to the painting - I took a look at Bateman's site and a previous commenter made the connection. It does indeed reflect that style - and how meditative and peaceful this piece feels.

Every time I see your work, I get an uplifting surge of inspiration. I'm serious. *awe*
This is so gorgeous. The color scheme and the inclusion of the swan remind me of some of Robert Bateman's works, lovelyyyy.
