Description Timelapse: 5:25

I've been packing for the big move since about May of this year.  Movers are scheduled to arrive right around the end of this month.  Tonight's discussion with the mover was that anything much smaller than a "Banker's Box" should probably be in a box.

I took the opportunity to pull most of the “small box” content out of the shed (off to the left) and pile it up and eventually deal with it.  I’m particularly fond of how I dealt with the shelving unit (once I got that mallet out of the other shed!), especially since it was dusty and/or wet (after trying to clean it) and the tape didn’t always stick.  It’s much more impressive in time lapse.

I've been here almost 37 years and have acquired quite a bit of ... stuff.

There is a minor milestone in this video at about 2:48 when I finally mark a box... "Misc".   It happens again a bit later.   I assume that soon I'll just dump stuff in a box and put an X on it.  If that.

This represents about from about 5:15 PM to 7:02 PM - just before I called my lovely wife to tell her about my escapades...

Thank-you so much - movers pick up the last of it yesterday - I'm heading up today- for a while at least.

As I was saying.... Watching this invokes very mixed feelings. Nonetheless, from experience I have to say: "Johnny, why bother? It's just stuff...throw it all away (except the puddy-tats)!"

Between 1987-2007 I changed country 5 times, each time I moved the amount of 'essential/cherished stuff' I owned diminished.... The first time was hard, a 'leap of faith', after which it started getting much easier. On move Nº3, my old 'officer's uniforms' were lost in transit... Hasn't affected my life in the slightest, I'm happy they're gone - less stuff! Move Nº5, boxfuls of floppies/CDs (Why do I need Windows 3.1 on 3½"or Win95, MS Encarta, Zip drive/disks....????).

I'm at the point now where I could happily move home at an hour's notice: leaving behind everything I currently own. Just knowing that is very liberating.

As I said to my mother this week: "You've reached the point where you longer own the stuff, the stuff owns you! And when you die it'll all go into a dumpster"

In short, you've missed a great opportunity here Johnny (but I do understand why you want to keep it all)!

Believe it or not - I'm tossing quite a bit- today I'll be tossing some old officer's uniforms - just a coincidence.   As to the floppies...   I do have a lot of old gear that still works and that I may need/want those for.

But - this basically is my first move - I left Michigan to join the Air Force in '78 - everything I owned fit in an 8' x 8' x 4' crate.   Four years laster I moved from Sacramento to San Jose in a 16' U-Haul and nearly filled it.  (Of course, I was being payed by the pound, so even old newspapers went with me on that move.

I think Benjamin Franklin said: Three moves equals one fire.   (Close:  "Three removes are as bad as a fire")

The Mr. Coffee isn't going - it's out because I hope to give it one more chance to make those amazing groaning sounds before I toss it.

In any case - today's the big day - I need to get pretty much everything that won't fit in the car, packed or tossed.

We shall see!

But thanks for the advice!

"Three moves equals one fire" Not heard that one before! Very succinct.

Well .... Bon Voyage Johnny and take it nice and easy, we're at that age (one of the most stressful things in life and all that!)

And tell the puddy-tats there are people in Europe depending on them to behave during the trip
