EDIT 10/02/15: If you're doing inktober I strongly recommend you to take a look at this tutorial! I've been getting a ton of questions that can be answered here c:Β
EDIT 10/05/2015: Fehnryr suggested an amazing site for editing your traditional art pics if you want an alternative from photoshop & softwares. Use www.ribbet.com/ Β to raise contrasts, make colors pop and make your pics as great as the real life drawings! Thank you Fehryr for the suggestion!!
EDIT 10/04/2016: It's that time of the year again! how are your inktobers going?

Very cool.Β Thank you.Β A lot of what you say about weight and contrast applies directly to black and white photography.

Unfortunately I don't have any equipment other than my old laptop and whatever free editing sites I can find online, but if I ever manage to get the money to upgrade my art tools I'll totally use this.

I already knew most of this, but having all these rules and tricks combined in one tutorial is awesome. And seeing your working process, of course. This will definitely go into my favs, especially since I like to point my watchers there when they ask me how to draw something. I fail at making tutorials, itΒ΄s really hard for me. So kudos to you for creating such a clean and basically perfect one.C:

"..the latter looks lifeless somehow." - That's honestly why I hate inking.Β I love those raw lines and the scribbles that are in a sketch, but when I got to ink them I lose a lot of those lines and once the pencil is erased I feel like I have a really flat boring piece. Though I guess coloring is the answer to that OTL

Hey, just wanted to tell all Users of Photoshop below CS6 (where line stabilization isn't implemented yet) that there are a lot of good programs for that.
The best I consider to be "Lazy Nezumi Pro", it also carries a lot of bonus features and (on of my favourites) perspective & isometric tools which are also not supported in CS6 and below.
It should generally work on all graphic programs but SAI, MS, etc. got it enabled as a standard.
Btw, this tutorial is quite good! I can't wait for the extended shading tut!

This is very helpful! Thank you~!
I've never though of working left-to-right when inking I'm usually all over the place. I'll be sure to try this next time I work on a traditional piece

Thank you so much for making and uploading this! Last night I was incredibly frustrated after being so busy with graphic design work and felt that what I was working on digitally looked super lifeless and I was about ready to give up on my digital line art being half as good as my traditional line art. I've been super inspired all day but lacking morale because I couldn't relate what I was having trouble with to anyone I know without feeling like I'd be bothering them. Even the advice about taking pictures of traditional art really nailed something I've been thinking about for a while.Β
I'm definitely going to try adjusting the settings on my tablet pen more and vary my line weight to see what happens. Thanks again!!

Thanks for taking the time to put this together! As someone who greatly admires your work and technique, I definitively got a lot out of this tutorial.Β
And if you do a shading tutorial, I'll certainly be studying it with the diligence of a high-schooler during finals week. xD
