right click the layers box
click on the list NEW LAYER
it should pop up a window and one of the options should be to make the layer transparent
also how old/new is your gimp they can differ

I made it only cause i saw nothing for GIMP animations but everything for PhotoShop >.> its harder to do it in PS.

I don't know how it's in PS, since I don't have it, and there are some other GIMP tutorials, but your is the most beginner-friendly of the ones I saw, imho.
