Description
There's a contest going on over at Project: Rooftop to design a costume for Captain America (any of those who have held the title). I just realized the due date is this Sunday, so I started sketching up some ideas. After taking a look around deviantArt to see what direction other people were taking with their entries, it seemed the vast majority were going for a more "realistic" modern/military take. So I thought instead I'd go for more of a straight super-hero look... who says Captain America can't have a cape?
Still messing around with it, but I think it's close to the final design. Trying not to spend too much time on this. Oh, and this is meant to be Bucky, not Steve...

Thanks, man. Well, I ended up chopping the cape in half, but it stuck around...

Kind of reminds me of Evel Knievel a bit. I really like his vest.

I might've been subconsciously thinking of EK when I was doing it. I think I've settled on a sort of half-cape for him, which is just going to add to the comparison.

Really digging that helmet, though I must reluctantly agree that the cape is a little weird for me.
...How about some nice fringe? Davy Crockett-style. I concur that the fingers should be solid-colored. I see your notation about the star in the middle - what about a white star with a red border?

I'm kinda back and forth on the chest star being red or white. My first thought was red, since it's meant to be Bucky (his whole Winter Soldier thing), but Cap's star is normally white, so I may just stick with that.
I think I've settled on doing a sort-of half cape. May be a bit too Elvis (or as Jesse pointed out, Evil Kenevil), but oh well.

I like the jacket, gloves, cowl, but the cape isn't working for me. It just doesn't fit with the rest of the outfit. I like the thought behind it though, definitely a different way to go. Try various styles of capes, and different designs. The straight stripes remind me of drapes.

Thanks, Ron. I've pretty much settled on a smaller half-cape (trying for a nod to Steve's old Nomad costume), and changed the design a bit. You were spot-on with the "drapes" comparison. After you pointed it out, it was all I could see.

So far, I'm a big fan! I always love seeing the concept stages of upcoming characters. The upper right design, with the buttoned jacket is a perfect fit for a WWII hero such as Cap. His upper chest and head design is spot on. The stripes over his should look nice (fitting in with the star on his chest), and work well with the vaguely "Venom"esque design on his mask. The gloves are one area that could maybe use some work. The red wriststraps are nice, but the white and red fingers are maybe a little too much. A solid color might do them better. Personally, I've always been a fan of when he's more nostalgic than modern. His ideals always struck me as America circa 1950's, and a modernized costume just doesn't represent that.
In regards to cape, I'm still a bit hesitant. I might need to see him in action before I'm sold That being said, I'm really looking forward to the finalized revamp!

Thank you, Ben! Really appreciate the in depth critique and suggestions.
I like your comments about the "nostalgic" aspect to his appearance - I'm attempting to echo some aspects of Bucky's previous outfits and I really didn't want to end up just re-making the Ultimate or movie Cap costumes.
I'm still not sure what to do with the gloves either, but I think you're probably right about the multi-colored fingers. Simpler is usually better.
To be honest, I'm not sure if I'm completely sold on the cape either, but I think I'm going to stick with it. Maybe just a half-cape or something. I'm hoping it'll at least make it stand out a bit from the other entries.
