Somebody counted 32 pony DD's though... I've seen a beautiful Celestia and Luna, and a cool custom somewhere.

There's probably a lot more, but there's no easy way for me to look up every MLP DD out there. I pulled these up by going back in time scrolling through other DD's.

It'd be 20% Cooler if Twilight's shading was like the other ponies. The light source is on the right for all the ponies except for Twilight, where it's on the left.

Honestly, I really do hate MLP art, mainly because this is a website for ART, not fanart, and only drawing MLP limits you.
But I want to congratulate you on the DD because you did a really amazing job (even if it's MLP fanart xD) you really have a talent for pixel art, and I encourage you to keep it up, and maybe branch out, because you really have potential.

Been playing in the MLP-style of art.. I use MLP as a touch-stone not as a stencil.

It does limit you if you continue to draw it over and over again.
However, a little fan art of a series isn't going to hurt anyone.

I don't like MLP either but how is fan ART not ART?
I do get what you mean by "drawing only one thing limits you" though, but why would deviantART have a "Fan Art" category if this site was for "ART"? XD (Which, as I stated before, fan ART IS.)

Piirustus In reply to GrappleMace [2012-09-05 01:10:26 +0000 UTC]
Because it's not really using your imagination, just redrawing the same characters over and over and over, in the same poses...If all they ever draw is MLP fanart (and thats what I normally find MLP artists to do) then it really limits them. They never get better, they never get a chance to grow because they never challenge themselves with something different.
Do you get what I'm saying?

L4m3ness In reply to Piirustus [2012-09-05 17:54:38 +0000 UTC]
Mh, honestly - who cares about seeing the same poses over and over again.. that's boring and this even bores people who like fanart a lot.
You can make comics using a little array of poses, then the art aspect is more in the story you tell - cool. But that's rare.
Most importantly, though, I think even if it's not your own character, you can still turn drawing this character into a massive challenge. Just use unusual perspectives with lots of motion and nice, atmospheric lighting.. and well, then it's still 'fanart', but the only thing different to 'real art' is that it's a character you didn't really design yourself. At some point you end up having to give the character more and more details though (fur, feathers, ...) that suddenly are up to you as an artist, though..
So overall I think there is a huge overlap between skills you can get simply by drawing fanart properly and skills you need as an artist in general. Yes, you won't learn human anatomy from ponies, or vehicles.. but then you just draw fanart of a show having these - whoops, it's fanart again, but you suddenly learned a huge new array of skills - and all through fanart.
So.. Drawing fanart and not challenging yourself are two completely different things

Speaking as someone who works as an artist professionally, and who uses this account exclusively for posting pony-art, I really must say that I at least disagree with the sentiments that fanart limits growth in an artist. Over the months, I've gotten to be quite involved in the MLP fan community, and it seems to me to be pretty extraordinary for the amount of sheer creativity that individuals are consistently demonstrating (in drawing, music, animation, artisan crafts, and so on)... I've really been impressed, and perhaps just because I've never really involved myself with online fandoms before but I doubt this is exclusive to ponies, either. Even though a lot of the work you'll frequently come across is rather on the cookie-cutter side it's true, there are also many people who have been inspired by the series, and by each other to create some really amazing works that are truly art, even if they also happen to be fanart at the same time. And just generally speaking on the subject, I might even go so far as to say that fanart (pony or no) encourages creativity; I can't tell you how many people who I have met at least, and almost on a daily basis who are striving to get into art because they have a love of the subject matter and want to get more involved in a fan community however they can... honestly, I find it to be quite inspiring myself.

I cannot relate with that. Considering the ideas I've been bringing up in the game project I'm in, I'm probably one of the more imaginative people. Better yet, the mere fact that I am working on game graphics already means that I'm trying out many things I have never done before, such as the first tree I pixelled, which is one of my most recent, yet most popular deviations. Also, look up 'adult sweetie belle', and you'll notice a pixel art piece that happens to be mine. Notice how it's much more different than other interpretations of a grown-up version of a child character.
Even with this mini-project with making all of these icons, I tried different ways of drawing the same thing. I even tried making physical sense of Pinkie's hair, which itself takes plenty of imagination. Despite drawing only fan art, look at my skill level a mere four months ago.
Pretty much, yeah. Sorry if this sounds like a giant wall-of-bragging,but I can't really relate with what you said about fan art supposedly limiting me.

GrappleMace In reply to Piirustus [2012-09-05 01:15:45 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I get exactly what you're saying. But only a percentage of people draw that kinda stuff (and I agree with you, most MLP fans are very, VERY guilty of this)
I was more talking about fan art as a whole and not just MLP. Like, I was listening to a song, and it reminded me of a character in a game, [link] (warning, hideous old art lol) so I drew him. Now, the character in the game is extremely stylized [link] and I made him more "human" looking, but still, it still took imagination. c:
But yeah, I draw original stuff too, and people that only draw fan art should try to branch out a little, but it doesn't make it any less "art". It's almost like drawing yourself, you already have a design, so if you draw a self portrait that's magically not "art" now?
(Sorry if I kinda misunderstood what you were trying to say there, that's just how I took it XD)

Eh, I guess what I said came across wrong...
Or I didn't say it right. I don't have anything against occasional fanart, but like I said, people that ONLY do fanart are hurting themselves as an artist...

Potus-Mat In reply to Piirustus [2012-09-05 05:40:47 +0000 UTC]
If I may be so bold as to interject...
Art is that which conveys emotion, thought, or story. A fandom is capable of generating enough of any of these that any artist could not create enough works to cover all of it. Yes, limiting oneself to MLP art does... well, LIMIT the artist, but limits have purpose. Ultimately, if an artist only creates MLP fanart, but is happy doing so and conveys many things, is he not better than the artist who creates many things, but is displeased and conveys little?
O, and starting off with "Honestly, I really do hate MLP art, mainly because this is a website for ART..." really sets people against you. Do not get me wrong, I respect that you had good reasoning and the courtesy to show it, but, still, no matter what you say after a line like that does not really change the fact that you had a really bad start there.
Civility!
