Description
Today I bring you my half of an art trade with the wonderful StacyKendra ! She runs a regular forum RP called Ringward , in which the system's celestial bodies are worshiped as deities. This one is Inreliqua, an icy moon orbiting the world of Obdormis . Here's Stacy's description:Inreliqua | "The Watcher" | F | Goddess of vigilance, poise, control
A pale white moon covered in ice, circling Obdormis (ringed planet where this continent is). Beneath a frozen shell, and so far hidden to the weak telescopes available to Obdormis' inhabitants, a single, sprawling subterranean city exists beneath a translucent sky jagged with icicles. As the only moon of Obdormis, there are signs where she's taken small meteors in the ancient past.
This one represents a lot of firsts for me -- first time painting asteroids with my brand-spanking-new tablet (heck yeah!), new lighting and nebula texturing techniques, and some new effects. Those glowing spots in the Southern hemisphere are vast underground caves; pockets of air caught in the icy crust, formed by ancient meteor strikes and filled with a bioluminescent glow. Under the icy crust lies a deep ocean, which is the cause of those icy striations on the surface. I modeled the texture after Saturn's moon, Enceladus, and am fairly happy with the result. Finally, those glowing streaks in the upper right are supposed to be a meteor shower in progress.
As always, please let me know what you guys think!
EDIT: I figured out how to soften the edges of the asteroids, and re-uploaded the fixed scene. Thanks again to Dygital-Gypsy for his critique.
EDIT2: Softened and blurred the asteroid texture *again*, still trying to make them work better.

The moon looks very beautiful, especially with the meteor shower (despite how dangerous they are). If I had to give criticism towards her, it would that she does not have a lot of craters, which a lot of moons tend to show, especially given the size of them.
Space also looks amazing, it gives off a vibe that Inreliqua is alone, showing that she is the only moon around Obdormis. However, this can be said as a criticism as well, since it does not show Obdormis. When I first saw this art, I thought of her as a planet at first, not a moon.
As Dygital-Gypsy said, the meteorites look obviously photoshopped in and look very unrealistic.
Overall, it's an amazing design of Inreliqua. It's a shame that the meteorites ruined it.

I think the entire critique is fair except for the last line, I don't think the Meteorites "ruined" the piece. I thought they add to the complexity and integrity of the work as a whole.

Before (at the time of the review), the meteorites didn't fit in with the scene. The artist has changed the meteorites so the review I made is outdated now (9 hour outdated review LOL). The meteorites look good now and I agree with you. However, I can't edit or remove reviews, so it is staying up it seems. :/

Oh I get it , thanks so much for explaining it to me! Very logical. I tried to change my unfair to fair but I can't edit it. Sorry if that caused you any stress. Its generous of you to give so many helpful, detailed , critiques.

Damn XD Tried to fix them, but they still need work I guess. Thanks for your critique!

This is spectacular work! Whether due to the commission request, or your own choices for the piece, the detail work that the artist has included in this scene add to the artwork, and make it live and breathe. The inclusion of details such as the bioluminescence cave pockets or the meteor shower hitting the planet's upper atmosphere only add to the realism of the scene depicted, bringing the entire piece to life. The only TRUE critique I could give would be to experiment with softening the edges of the asteroids. I don't know what program (or programs) the artist is using for these digital creations. I also cannot be certain whether the "ghost edges" I'm seeing on some of the larger rocks is as a result of the described lighting source or not. But the fine white line I detect around some of the larger asteroids (possibly the result of designing those space rocks with transparent backgrounds, then importing them into the artwork, and placing them where required in the artwork), IMHO, distracts from the realism, because it essentially makes the rocks look "photoshopped" into the scene... e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="19" height="19" alt="
" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="234" title="Shrug"/> Otherwise, it is an extremely detailed and well-constructed piece. Bravo!

Totally fair, and thank you for the critique. I did design them on a transparent layer, and then added the shading in a new layer (and the texturing in *another* layer on top of that). When I was done, I noticed the hard edges but wasn't sure how to get rid of them. You may have just given me the clue I needed, so thank you!

Hello Planetrix
First of all, wowie very spectacular
You take us to places in the universe we'd otherwise never see.
And it is not just a silent empty space .. in space. (well yes it is silent cuz no sound but you know XD)
Lotsa things are happening. You describe this moon and surroundings, been seen as a deity and indeed,
I almost get this feeling of looking at beings here in a confrontation.
Now, I know not much about space art and I haven't made any myself so I can't really share any thoughts,
comparing it to other works.
I do like to play around with atmospheres and vibes tho,
so maybe some babbling about such things could be interesting XD
When I see such a view, I can't help but think of who is viewing it.
Well us, of course, but I mean the imaginary thing that 'shot' the picture
As a viewer, thinking about that makes the whole scene even more spacious and dimensional
If one or two asteroids would be even closer to us, more in the way,
there would be the effect that we could be crashing into them.
Voila, it be almost like we are truly there
It is not clear to me where the light is coming from.
The Inreliqua has an obvious light cast upon her,
but then, if I look to the direction it comes from and all the nebula around there,
it doesn't seem there is a light source casting such bright light as you'd expect, watching the moon.
Also, the asteroids do not have a cast from a light source from the same direction.
Logically thinking there would be two light sources cast on the asteroids.
It be the same one casting on the moon, so from up left, out of the pictures border,
and the pale cold light cast from the moon itself (so the reflection becomes the other light source hehe).
That red beaming thingiemahbobs and then the other two green and blue brighter lights/stars,
could also be casting a bit of their glow on the surrounding nebula, putting them a tiny bit more into place,
The glowing spots you describe as underground caves filled with a bioluminescent glow, to me first looked like light glares.
I think they are maybe just a tad too bright, round and big to be perceived as part of the moon's surface.
Probably if they'd be drawn before adding the moons shades and light, as part of its texture, they'd settle better.
Anyways Overal, I think this is a beautiful piece you made here.
The nebula, the asteroids, the stars and the ice ice cold moon, Inreliqua are awesomely pictured
The only thing I find a bit rambling is the light(s) and how they are cast.
I think that with some more thought spend on that everything will come to be just right
Hope my babbling had some use for you!
Have a great weekend

Hi Whobleyh , thanks for the highly detailed, thoughtful comment
The solar system's sun is out of frame and up toward the left, and that was the only light source I considered when painting those asteroids. I can't believe that I missed the moonlight! XD
Well, lighting is just one of those things that I really have to work on, so thank you very much for pointing out where I missed the mark. It'll really help for future pieces!

Very interesting work.
Even when my language barier prevents me from fully understanding yours description, the art speak for itself.
But it is looking like planet which would be habitable only with great difficulties.

Thank you very much! You're right, it's a very desolate, very cold planet. The only place to live is in those glowing bubbles under the surface, which are pockets of breathable air.

how do you make the asteroids?

Planetrix In reply to b0NNb0NN [2017-10-02 19:10:34 +0000 UTC]
Here's the basic method I tried to follow:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G7nXj…
I painted my asteroids onto a layer with a transparent background rather than painting them right onto the scene, and I think this lead to the sharper edges you see around them. Need to work on the method a little bit, but I was still pretty happy with the results. Thank you!
