Description Something new for you guys today: a collaboration piece with my friend, 8ighteyed !  She does really amazing patterns and line work, and I've admired her stuff for a long time.  When I saw some of her ornamental "planet" concepts, I knew that I had to try using one with a planet texture, and happily she agreed!  (For her part of the collaboration, she took one of my own hand-sketched mandalas and made some gorgeous kaleidoscopic images.  If you want to check them out, click here for her Instagram page .)

This piece is loosely inspired by the movie Treasure Planet.  I wondered what it would look like to have a planet literally covered with the smelted gold of untold worlds, shining in the light of a distant sun.  Of course, it would have to be somewhere out of the way and hard to find (because what pirate treasure isn't?), so I pictured it lost in a drifting nebula.  This barren desert world would be completely uninhabitable by humans, of course, due to the massive amount of radiation from that nebula, but that doesn't seem to bother some alien lifeforms. . .

I put my new tablet to good use on this one.  The nebula is mostly hand-painted, loosely following a tutorial by the talented Ranarh , whom I also have to thank for some feedback along the way.  I also added a SPACE WHALE.  'Cause, why not?

Thanks also to priteeboy for taking an early look and giving me some pointers.

Greetings from !

This is a very good looking painting, I always liked space related pictures and I think this would make a great desktop image to be honest.
I remember watching treasure planet no less than ten years ago and I still think it was one of the best animated movies disney has ever made in terms of animation, it pains me to know by now that it actually became a business failure since it didn't gather as much money as expected, even though it was such a good movie

This one and "The road to El Dorado" are movies that have so much quality in them and certainly deserve a lot more attention.

Now onto the review.

Composition: Good!

  • It is very easy to tell where the viewer is supposed to look at (the planet and the whale) because they're the only two elements on the screen aside from the space itself, and they are very close to the center of the picture, however as a personal opinion I think it might've been better if the planet were to be positioned more to the left, to give off a more panoramic perspective.

Colors: Very good!

  • I love the colors you chose for this piece, specially that teal green on the bottom and the left, it somehow complements the warmer hue of the top section of the nebula.
  • I also noticed how you never used pitch plack in the picture, not even on the space on the right!
  • However I think you could've put more time on making the union between the two colors on the top left a little more seamless, because to me it sort of looks like there are two different nebulas instead of just one. (But I don't really know how nebulas work so this is all up for debate)

Details on the nebulas: Amazing!

  • Your painting skills are very much above averange, coloring a picture like this is not easy, and even if you did follow a tutorial, you did splendidly well, the nebulas are quite certainly the most interesting part of the piece, they look like they have their own texture and form, the bright stars and the beautiful patterns of lightning make them extremely pleasant to look at, and the fact that part of the nebula is hiding the planet makes it even more interesting.

Details on the planet and the whale: Very good!

  • The pattern of the texture in the planet is simply gorgeous, must have taken a while to get that done in the first place, although I wonder how you implemented it in the planet to begin with, did you by chance use a 3d software for that? because I kinda get the feeling you did, the surface of the planet has this really subtle texture to it aside from the golden pattern and this is something that could've been added by rendering a 3d sphere, but maybe it's just me.
  • The space whale actually looks pretty good, I like her colors and the spirit-like design of the tail, but I'm not so sure why it's there and what it is doing, my best guess is that it's going towards the planet but that's about it, I kinda looks out of place but I honestly don't know why.

Extra notes:

  • There is somerhing I noticed after looking at this for close enough, and that is that the space on the background (to the right) looks kind of empty, and it sort of clashes against the rest of the picture, like everything else is overflowing with details while the rest of the space is just there.
  • I think you could add some more details instead of just having a lot of white dots as stars, don't get me wrong it still looks pretty and I like how the dots have different variations regarding size, but I feel like you could add some more complementary stuff like a far away galaxy some brighter stars, asteroids and stuff like that.

Conclusion:
I really like this picture, it is 100% wallpaper material, very nice to look at. While there were some things I thought needed fixing keep in mind that even with all that this still looks gorgeous.
Again, I LOVE the nebulas, they're extremely well done and I want to congratulate you for doing such a good work on them, I wasn't very sure what to say after seeing "collaboration" in the title, but I hope the things I talked about were done by you (because I can't really blame you if I see something off and it turns out you weren't responsible for that haha)

Hope I didn't miss anything,
Have a nice day

Hi there, and thank you very much for the very constructive comment!

I don't work with 3D at all yet, just layers upon layers of texture in GIMP, so it was really pleasant to hear that I'm achieving an almost 3D effect there.  The pattern for the golden ornamentation is what I received from 8ighteyed for the collaboration, the rest was done by me. I also appreciate the notes about the placement of the planet and the background.  I also agree that the colors for nebula at the top could have been blended a little better.

Thanks again, and I hope you have a fantastic rest of your weekend.

Hi there, I am from

Oh yes, I remember Treasure Planet and it's one of the underatted 2D Disney Movie. I started to know this movie when I first watch it on Toon Disney (currently Disney XD) back in 2006 four years after it was released on cinema. I wish Disney make more 2D animations instead of focus on CGI Films. I don't hate CGI Disney Films. There are some CGI Disney Films that I like such as Meet the Robinsons, UP, Wreck it Ralph, Bug's Life, Big Hero 6, Monster University, and Bolt.

Man, it have been forever since I saw this movie. This art is pretty much represent the nostalgia of your childhood which is very cool. The stars on this picture are done very well and I like how you make it sparkly and gleaming. The fogs/skies are so colorful and beautifully well done which is nothing wrong with that. The planet in this picture are also done very well and I also love the effect the plane that you did. The effects on the planet is kind of shaped like a flower or something which is also cool. Man, I wish I could do realistic effects on my Photoshop but I suck at it.

The space whale on this picture, I can't quite put my fingers on it. The space whale on this picture, it doesn't look like whale to me. It look like a  goldfish to me but it is still good nonetheless. Dang it, my eyes play trick on me again.

Overall, you did pretty great job on this piece. The planet, the stars, the effects on the planet, and the skies/fogs. So keep up the good work.

Hi, and thank you for your comment!  I added little tendrils off the back of the whale's tail to try and make it look more alien, but the perspective is probably screwed up a bit as well.  I'm trying desperately to learn how to draw

Apart from the many great aspects of this piece, I really like how the planet is bathing in the interstellar cloud. It looks comfortable (as much as a planet can appear to have such feelings ).

2Deep2 [2017-10-10 11:27:03 +0000 UTC]

I actually like it as it gives the impression of a constructed planet inlaid with rune matrixes, patterns upon patterns, now the viewer is left to wonder is it emerging from the depths or reciding back into another relm. Was it created there or hidden for some other reason

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Planetrix In reply to 2Deep2 [2017-10-10 12:31:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, 2Deep2!  I figured that the people or beings who found the planet carved out huge channels and inlaid them with gold; the work of a thousand years.  But I also really like the idea that the whole thing was constructed from nothing, built up layer by layer until it reached its final state.  Then . . . forgotten?  Hidden?  Who knows!

Kombayn [2017-10-10 09:57:39 +0000 UTC]

You have an awesome technique and this piece obviously took you a lot of work, but this thing doesn't look like a planet at all. More like a planet-sized decorated ball drifiting in space for whatever reason. And the "space whale" looks really out of place here, as it 1) looks more like a blood clot and 2) doesn't match the rest of the picture in color.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Planetrix In reply to Kombayn [2017-10-10 12:29:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment, Kombayn!  I didn't keep track of the number of hours I put into this piece -- probably close to 20.  The ornamental texture is supposed to look extreme (it was the part I received for the collab), and obviously something like this is unlikely to ever exist   There is a rocky/desert texture buried beneath all that gold, and I agree it's super hard to see, but the end result with the gold covering the whole surface is exactly what I had in mind when I started this piece.

I did change the color of the whale though!  Did *not* want it reminding people of a blot clot XD.  Please let me know if you think the colors work better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kombayn In reply to Planetrix [2017-10-11 09:25:09 +0000 UTC]

I'd say the new colour is partly better, yet it doesn't change anything. My association stemmed from its shape rather than colour (it was pink at first, I don't know any creatures with pink blood). Removing the wavy parts from the tail would be a better option. Or removing that whale at all. Or leave it as it is, even knowing it looks out of place. Your work, your decisions.

Planetrix In reply to Kombayn [2017-10-11 12:28:25 +0000 UTC]

Think I'll leave it in, then.  Kind of in "kick it out the door" mentality with this piece by now, after staring at it for so long.     I really do appreciate the feedback, though, so thank you for taking your time to comment!
