I'm with Dumbledore. It was kinda obvious to me, though I do find it really amusing how many people were shocked.

Heee, it didn't occur to me while reading, but when I heard about it afterwards I was like "well, it makes perfect sense", so yeah, I found the huge backlash to be kind of an overreaction XD

I'm not a gay cheaper anyway but...Making him a man that has loved, it makes him more human and I'm really attached to his character

Greatkingrat88 [2011-04-04 11:39:27 +0000 UTC]

I was a little disappointed in Rowling doing this. Dumbledore features as a wholly asexual, grandfatherly (and apparently a bit of a chessmasterly) fugre throughout the books. Turning him gay after it all ended just felt unnecessary.

Pojypojy In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2011-04-04 12:34:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, one could argue that she didn't turn him gay as much as said out loud what was already implied in the Grindelwald storyline... And honestly I don't think that Jossing his backstory changed anything about the grandfatherly mentor figure we've known in the books - in terms of character development it is the same as if Gellert Grindelwald had been Gerta Grindelwald. I am not a fan of "word of God"/jossing in general, but I'm willing to cut Rowling some slack here, since - sadly - to openly address a main character's homosexuality in what is regarded as a children's book would have been a bold and even admirable move, but it would also have created a lot of unnecessary controversy.

Greatkingrat88 In reply to Pojypojy [2011-04-04 12:43:58 +0000 UTC]

If there was implication, subtext, then it had to be subtext you wanted to see. I recall no such subtext, and I doubt many saw that either.
The Jossing (TV Tropes, eh?) did not change much, yes, but it felt like a cop-out, something done just for the sake of controversy. Mayhap she had it planned all along, but it came off as contrived, unnecessary nonetheless.

Pojypojy In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2011-04-04 18:04:15 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a slasher so I usually don't look for gay subtext on a general basis - but I found it fitting in this case? I don't know, it just made sense to me, but (and that's also kind of the point of the drawing) while it makes Dumbledore more of a fleshed out individual, it doesn't change anything wrt the Dumbledore in Harry's story, so it's not even much of a big deal. Having to make clarifications outside the text is always an admission of defeat for the writer I guess, but I never thought Harry Potter was first rate literature in the first place - so I guess I'm more indulgent with its flaws than I'd be with works I have higher expectations about.

Greatkingrat88 In reply to Pojypojy [2011-04-04 18:12:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is not actually a BIG deal- just something that sort of irked me. I agree that Harry Potter is not first rate literature (although leagues above teen trash like Twilight), but it is a powerful story nonetheless, and... I dunno, it just sort of didn't agree with how I saw Dumbledore. It felt... cheap.

He was a man in his centenial years with a cheerful disposition and a delight for exquisite clothes. Does it matter if he was gay?

Besides, at least he fell for a bloke with looks and a danger streak

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pojypojy In reply to Daniel-Gleebits [2011-01-27 15:29:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, this is kind of the point of the picture - a lot of people really got their pants in a twist when Rowling made the reveal, while it doesn't really change anything about the character as we knew him from the books

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Daniel-Gleebits In reply to Pojypojy [2011-01-27 15:39:57 +0000 UTC]

If anything it makes sense to me. And I'm rather inclined to think she planned it earlier on than the 7th book, perhaps even the first, because if you remember, it mentions his battle with Grindlewald in the first book, and Rowling has an enduring theme of mentioning important aspects of the story several books before the reader comprehends the true importance of whatever it was.

johnnybelacqua [2010-12-31 07:28:59 +0000 UTC]

Haha, funny. You know how people say that just because Rowling SAYS he's gay doesn't mean he is, and I'm kinda inclined to agree with the whole they-are-just-writers-what-do-they-know thing, but in any case YOU SHOULD KNOW DUMBLEDORE IS GAY. He's fabulous. He's been fabulous ever since book one. It's not that hard to guess.

Pojypojy In reply to johnnybelacqua [2010-12-31 14:26:46 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yes, while I don't entirely embrace the whole "death of the author" thing I tend to dismiss (or simply avoid) the things they expand on in interviews, and only consider canon what's in the book/film/tv series. BUT in Dumbledore's case... well, it's a bit of characterization that just makes sense. Granted, it would have been a bold (and admirable) move to say it in the text but let's face it, it would have caused the shitstorm of all shitstorms given that HP is a ~children's book.

I feel so... well... stupid for plain terms to just have recently found out this new peice of info on Dumbledore.

Ah, well, it doesn't change him nor the book in the least bit, and personally, it doesn't come to much a suprise or shock. It fits him well actually.

I've read all the Harry Potter books, seen all the movies except for 7, and NOWHERE in ANY of them does it say he is gay. Is it something someone just made up? Please help me, I'm lost.

OuranHarryPotterfan9 [2010-10-06 06:42:22 +0000 UTC]

why was every one making such a big deal out of it? so he's gay - don't make him a pedo or anything

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pojypojy In reply to OuranHarryPotterfan9 [2010-10-06 16:31:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, I guess it's because it was (I think) the first time we got a gay character in a major franchise that's mostly aimed at kids, or is at least perceived as such. It was a bit of aturning point - albeit one can argue that Rowling "outed" Dumbledore after the series was over, and not *in* the text. That still has to happen.
