OMG TV CANON IS ALREADY BLEEDING IN MUST RESIST but yeah, I was thinking of Finn Jones' (aka HBO!Loras) fabulous hair when I drew this. Also that sort of Renaissance profile portraits that noble people used to get for themselves, lookin' all *serious* and shit, except without anime coloring I guess.Tl;dr - this is Loras Tyrell, kthnxbye

Well, Baratheon colors are black and gold, I always assumed that Renly chose green as a way to win the favor of house Tyrell in general, given that he is basically waging war with their money. Also I guess that not using Baratheon colors was a way to divert the attention from the issue of *not* being the legitimate Baratheon successor, given that he was the youngest son, so it was also a PR move in that respect. His whole claim to the throne was a big flip of the finger to the succession laws that are kind of a Big Deal in the story, so he had to present himself as someone out of left field, in a way. Idk, tv!Renly might choose Tyrell colors mostly for Loras' sake, but I always got a more pragmatic, politically savvy vibe from book!Renly overall /thinky thoughts

But Renly wore Tyrell colors even before the war. From the moment Ned met him. I think Renly saw the Tyrells as a replacement family, given that he was an orphan and never close to his brothers. He wore the colors probably as an ode to his lover/because he fit in with the Tyrells more.

that makes exellent sense, I am severely dissapointed in TV Renly myself. The one in the books was daring at the very least... and well dressed apparently. I've always wondered what would have happened if Stannis's shadow had failed, because at the time of his death Renly commanded one of the biggest armies in all westeros.

Yep, with tv Renly I can't help but wonder "why would the smallfolk and the aristocracy alike be willing to follow this guy into war?". I can get behind the actor not looking the way he's described in the books (even if in the books he's hotter, lol), but I think he's written in a way that stripped him of most of his charisma. Though I liked it how he stood up against Robert in the hunt scene.

Although I cannot comment on Renly's ''hotness'' I will say that he most definately seemed much more saavy and collected in the books, not to mention the whole tall and well muscled thing. An acount on which the TV Renly falls despairingly short. I also enjoyed the way he stood up to Robert, although that bit of strenfth was pretty much destroyed by the scene of Loras shaving him. Talk about a sure fire way to kill your masculinity.

I guess the sene with Loras would have been more poignant if contextualized, with a Renly whose public persona is genial, snarky and charismatic. In the show we just get Loras telling him "oh don't worry, you'll be a great king because EVERYONE LIKES YOU" but we never see how and why Renly got to be so popular! But that's one of my main gripes with the show tbh, they tend to tell rather than show, and while budget limits can explain this choice to an extent it's not always justified, I think.

yeah and thaey did roughly the same thing with Catelyn I have been severely disappointed by the actress that plays her. I can agree with that, the scene would probably have been a little more palpable with book Renly

Haha, glad you liked that, armors are always a bit of a pain for me to draw (UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR) so I'm self conscious about them
