If you have questions, please ask. I'll do my best to answer them. (:

If you want to try this and need a sketch (...too lazy to draw your own? XD), you can use one of mine;
cow , angel , ...

If you just want to try to CG, you can use one of my linearts:
(will update as soon as I finish one)

------------------------

Regarding the PEN TOOL - err.. it's kinda hard to explain XD; ..which is why I didn't really explain it. It's like the bezier tool in oekakis or MS Paint -- in a way.
Click once at the starting point of your line, and click and drag in the direction of the line (at the spot you want your line to end). Play with the dragging until you like how the line looks (don't let go of the mouse button!)~ and then do the right click > stroke path thing. Look at this if you can't visualize it...XD [link]

LAYERS - if you're confused about what I meant with the layers, take a look here --> [link] That's the layers palette for the image in the tutorial.

No, it wasn't confusing. :3 It helped, thank you very much! <3 And since you don't go perfectly around the hair, is it the same for that then too? Like while coloring the hair, say you were to get some hair color on the face? Or since the 'hair' layer is above the 'skin' layer it would overlap it and then you would just have to erase what you don't want outside the hair? Let me know if that didn't make any sense. x-x

Even though I'm a beginner at attempting to cg, this is probably going to sound like a horribly dumb question. I've gotten everything fine up until this point though. When you color and shade the skin using the polygonal lasso tool, you don't go perfectly around the lineart to color it, which I understand. But then when you moved onto the hair, all the the skin color, like around the face and parts that colored up into the hair, are cleaned away. So is there an easy way to clean up what you don't want outside the lineart, or do you just have to use the eraser to carefully go around it and clean up? Sorry if this doesn't make sense.

poli-chan In reply to Akemi-Hime [2007-04-06 04:11:19 +0000 UTC]

oh! that's because, in the example with the skin and the hair, I cover up the skin color ~ if you look at [link] , you'll notice that the "skin" layer is underneath the "clothes" and "hair" layers, so anything on the clothes/hair layers overlapping with the skin would cover the skin.

(...let me know if the way I worded it was confusing o_o;)

THANK YOU SO MUCH that was soo usefull! But umm... How come for step number 6, you said that it won't colour out of the lines, but when I did it (I followed your steps) It goes out of the colours of the skin layer? PLEASE HELP. Thank you so much

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

poli-chan In reply to silverxrain [2007-03-08 20:11:49 +0000 UTC]

did you group the layers? ~make sure the layer that is grouped (in the layers palette, it's the one immediately above the skin layer) is selected. you may have been coloring on another layer :9 (...I do that sometimes. XD)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

silverxrain In reply to poli-chan [2007-03-08 21:13:14 +0000 UTC]

when I press ctrl+g, it makes the layer go in a "set", like that folder thing. But maybe it is because I have photoshop cs2. Have any idea >👍: 0 ⏩: 1

poli-chan In reply to silverxrain [2007-03-08 23:26:09 +0000 UTC]

for photoshop CS... ~JyShin told me you have to use a "clipping mask" and set it to the base (in your case, the skin) layer.

[link] says to do this, you should "hold the Option key (Mac) or Alt key (PC) as you move your mouse over the border between the adjustment layer and the underlying layer. When the cursor changes to a double-circle, release your mouse. " try it and let me know if it works!

I didn't quite understand the hair shine part

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

poli-chan In reply to X-Anime-Fan-X [2007-03-04 13:22:34 +0000 UTC]

What don't you understand about it?
Uhmm... create a new linear dodge layer (although personally, now I just use a color I like on a normal layer XD) for the hair shine. Take a biiiig brush on medium-low flow, and brush in a circular motion--around the crown of the head (or wherever else you'd like to shine).

(Did I go over the confusing part? o_o)

Thank you so much for this tutorial it was so helpful.

I don't want to sound stupid, but what is open canvas? Is it some kind of program like photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

poli-chan In reply to peppermintmilktea [2007-02-19 04:13:13 +0000 UTC]

yes, it's an art program. however it's not designed so much for photo editing (as photoshop is) and is aimed more towards CG artists, I think. it has some really cool capabilities with its brushes that photoshop doesn't~

I've never actually used PSP, so I wouldn't know... but try it out and see what happens. If it doesn't work, there are plenty of PSP tutorials out there that describe basically the same thing. :D

For the people who sketches it out on paper and scans them, colorizing doesn't come out nice. Maybe you can add an extra section for when you do scan the sketch, you can go to Image > Adjustments > Variations... and then pick the color.

I think it's better that way .

BTW, I love your tutorial. Without it, I'd end up airbrushing everything >_>;.
