Thank you very much. I especially like your observations of what other artists have done. That made me see things from a different perspective, and it makes me realize that I should pay closer attention to detail.

Ah. And you've added videos! Bless you, sweet child!

How do you make a scanned picture's background transparent? cuz your way of coloring the lineart doesn't work with white background...

Hello. I have a burning desire to help you, and I hope I will succeed. Let's go.

This is a bit difficult to explain through text, as it is something that makes more sense visually. It will be much more beneficial for you to follow up with some tutorials and to fiddle around a little bit in the program.

It's not necessarily a white background, but rather, the lineart, that is important.

An understanding of lineart and layers is key. In this tutorial, the artist has used lineart. She scanned her image and then inked it digitally. There are many methods to do this, and there are many tutorials on deviantART that can assist you.

Lineart, in my opinion, is a lot easier and convenient to work with, because the lines are much cleaner. When it comes to things like making a transparent background, lineart is much easier to work with. Part of the process to making a transparent background is the use the magic wand tool. When you use this tool, you are selecting pixels, which is a very exact measurement. Doing something so exact requires that your lineart is clean, and the most convenient way to create clean lineart is to produce it digitally.

Now, if you prefer to work directly from your scanned image, you certainly can, and there are many options that are better explained through the tutorials on DeviantART. Again, clean lines are key. When you scan the image, you must make the lines as clean as possible. These clean lines are achieved through cleaning the final sketch, though, and not on the first try (to avoid any feelings of intimidation, if any!).
I am not sure what keywords would be best to use in the search bar, but I assure you that there are tutorials out there for turning sketches into lineart, without having to digitally ink them.

This explanation in a nutshell: you must have clean lineart.

The artist's tutorial is actually very affective, and once you grow comfortable with creating lineart, you should definitely give this a try.

I hope this helped in any way. I myself am making that transition from traditional to digital work, so you have my unsolicited sympathy.

And again, it takes some fiddling around in photoshop or whatever program you have in order to get a better grasp of it. And I do suggest searching around for some tutorials. There are multiple methods to do many things, so learning from a lot of tutorials and combining the knowledge that you've gained from each of them helps a lot.

Good luck to you!

^_^ Not bad if you're doing smaller images, I tried doing it with an anime character I drew and Lol, let's just say it didn't come out too well

popcorn1010 In reply to Wuzzly [2009-08-11 01:35:44 +0000 UTC]

Smaller images? I do them with large ones as well.

Wuzzly In reply to popcorn1010 [2009-08-11 13:07:28 +0000 UTC]

You can, but when you increase the brush size, it increases the lines x_x And I like the lines to be super thin (lol). I mean, I guess you could do it with an anime outline, but the file size would have to be small Maybe that's my problem xD It's too big

popcorn1010 In reply to Wuzzly [2009-08-12 14:58:31 +0000 UTC]

I don't understand why it's a problem if it's a large file size?
I use normally around 1200x800 but I also use 7000x2000 or something of that sort.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wuzzly In reply to popcorn1010 [2009-08-12 16:27:24 +0000 UTC]

Really? And you can save it as a paintbrush? I've tried doing a large file like that and when I went to Define Brush, it wasn't an option...only Define Pattern was...I think I'll experiment a little more and see if I can get it to work ;D

:C Don't feel that way! Let them inspire you instead of scare you!

Most of them are older as well!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tisserovehicks In reply to popcorn1010 [2009-06-06 00:05:38 +0000 UTC]

yeah about that:-

1.when i see references other people get and see their artwork. i usually want to the same-but if they are a higher lvl than me, it makes me want to catch up with the feeling i know i can't until i slowly get expirience. i still don't know how to use masking to color D:.
2.i don't like to know the fact that they are older, i like to hang/try to be with the same to close age like Monet and my friends ya?

don't worry though, your higher than me but im just saying

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

popcorn1010 In reply to Tisserovehicks [2009-06-06 00:10:46 +0000 UTC]

I understand what you're saying. Monet would know more than anyone that I'm easily jealous and I envy many people. She's seen me quit art plenty of times-- We all feel this way. There's ALWAYS someone better out there we just have to face that.

Even if someone is older than me, I still try to be better. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to art. I personally hate my artwork and my style, but many artists feel this way~

Tisserovehicks In reply to popcorn1010 [2009-06-06 00:18:46 +0000 UTC]

1. i hate perfectionists- it kinda seems easy to get down more if you always have to try your best on one idea. which is probably why you say you'd quit.
2. i envy/am jealous of you since your bettar and older with expirience. D|
3. saying "we all" doesn't help to say to a person who feels different on a subject...i think.

how serious about are you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

popcorn1010 In reply to Tisserovehicks [2009-06-06 00:25:36 +0000 UTC]

I hate perfectionists too |D Which is why I'm trying not to be one.
I think I act that way because I'm extremely serious about art :/

You shouldn't be jealous of me D:

your being hipocritical of what you just said....lolxD but i see what you mean.

i have every right to be jealous of the bettar artist

popcorn1010 In reply to Tisserovehicks [2009-06-06 00:35:24 +0000 UTC]

I mean, I'm a perfectionist and I hate it. That's what I mean xD;

I guess everyone is jealous of someone

Tisserovehicks In reply to popcorn1010 [2009-06-06 00:47:55 +0000 UTC]

yeah my best friend was jealous of me, im jealous of you and monet, monet is (confusingly!?)jealous of my skills of not using a tablet and so graphic affects?! and....uh...who you jealous of?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

popcorn1010 In reply to Tisserovehicks [2009-06-06 00:54:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah 'cause you're really good without using a tablet! I used to be OKAY with a mouse, but now I can only kinda use one.

I'm jealous of alot of people.

PREDJUDISM! when you have a laptop, does the little pad and 3 buttons below it count as a mouse, if it doesn't-then im doing it harder than a mouse . apparently NOBODY has known or tried using shift click but thats oulining the hard way apparently...but its the only way i know how and it works for me, however i feel that it doesn't or can't make me do stuff like you with it.

well like i said! i use shift click and outline them by hand.
which doing that shortcut i can work somewhat faster.
if i didn't know that, i would've quit doing colored pics
thanks for seeing it my way, which makes me amped to color now!

Go on a obsessed rampage of drawing the things you suck at. Eventually you'll get better :> For example, if you're not good at hands, keep drawing pictures where the main focus are the hands. Don't hide 'em

And you're not repeating anyone else Everyone tries to get better ^^
