Rendering done from my friend Ivan using 3DstudioMAX 3 or 4. Model and export are my.
This is the beginning of Vray ( the last one was just 4 files - not program we presently know ).

I'm not sure how you guys are impressed by the textures. The only places that have textures (walls+ground) are extremely basic and simple.
This guy kicks ass at modeling cool robots in AutoCAD, which is awesome, but this robot simply has raytrace materials with a lot of reflection, so there's 0 texturing involved there and 0 mapping.
I love the robot though, not many people use AutoCAD for sci-fi stuff. Great job.
Btw, whoever said this looks like a game screenshot...games (apart from 1 demo) don't use Raytracing and they don't use such high polygon counts.

How do you get that soft powdery feel to your renders?

i love it man, but the render times are far too high. You need to try to tweak some stuff and cut them down. Sometimes cutting down a few reflection/refraction levels will actually cut HOURS from render times. Also something else you can do is replace area shadows with softened shadow maps which saves hours as well. Try limiting GI and Indirect illumination to only areas that will be needing it, such as places where movement is present, the rest can have a falloff limit and can be lit with regular lights or can be Baked on with textures. Other little thing that saves render time would be on darker reflecting objects such as the feet and glass, you can limit the objects being reflected to only the bright objects OR just the ceiling so that you dont have to raytrace every single object in the scene.. otherwise you get things like reflecting the reflecting object next to the reflective objects which in turn reflects on the reflection and causes a mess of raytracing calculations and eats up cpu cycles.
Last and probably biggest thing that kills on render times is volumetrics.
If you are pulling volumetric area shadows.. watch out.. cuzz that is a huge burdon on the computer. If you need soft volumes use shadow maps man, cuzz volume area shadows are freaking intensive and dont look much different on stills than area shadows, and even on animations if they arent moving.
Other things i can comment on is the texture, .. higher res could help a lot, but i noticed that last because the model was freaking nice and i loved the render.

... this is done in 2001 and it`s a testing of Vray ( when he was just some scripts ) ... you write a review in todays point of view 2005 ...
...can i see some of your 3D renderings from 2001 ?

i'm not criticizing, i think its excellent. I also didnt see the date. Impressive.
I just gave a general overview, because i dont use vray, i've only used Brazil, Mental Ray, and Final Render, but they all have similar features and concepts are all the same.
I still think you did a fantastic job on this.
In 2001, i was 15 and just barely starting 3d, so i'll have to dig up some of my renders from then ^_^

... i dont know what you mean " similar features and concepts " , but in 2001 the was only 1 GI/radiosity render engine for PC ( not for some render farms or working stations for thousands dollars ) and this was Vray ( working fine on CPU 512 MHz with 256 Mb RAM ) ...
In present day mental ray blocking my laptop on CPU 3.2 GHz and 512 Mb RAM ... amazing ...

Mental Ray works perfect and i rendered those hdri shots in 4 minutes 30 seconds on a 1ghz p3 with 768 mb ram.
I've been using mental ray since it was available in version 3.5 of 3d max. Has worked fine and i used to run a 450 mhz amd with 256 mb ram. Sure render times were slower cuzz of the slower clock cycles but the render didnt lock up because of it. Usually lock ups are due to some kind of conflict in the calculations, IE raytracing error, GI boucing (like it has to many bounce levels)
Mental Ray is one of the best raytracers out there, it is available under all platforms(windows, mac, linux.. etc.) , on many different apps (3d max, softimage, maya, houdini)
it is mainly due to its flexibility in the shader language and programability of it. This renderer, yes is more of a pipeline, industry renderer, but by no means is it ONLY that. I use it on my single workstation easily and it works quickly and effiiently.
It is a pricy rendering engine, but for those who are out to take advantage of all its features its worth it.
Vray geared more toward only 3d animators who need easy to set up features (like brazil and final render are) usually most users of those arent going to write shaders or re-compile parts of the renderer to fit their infrastructure or proprietary software because they only use off the shelf software and dont need to.
It all comes down to what the user preference and needs are. Mental Ray work really well for my work
in no way am i putting down vray, or any other renderers; as a matter of fact i use other renderers as well. I use Brazil and Renderman apart from Mental Ray, because each have their strong points.
Vray is a great renderer as well, i've used the learning edition before.

Nice, really nice robot there. Not so keen on the background though, it looks way less realistic than the robot, but that dun matter much.

GodDAMN! That is GOOD! Man...I hope I'm that good someday! So are those real reflections (raytraced) on its body? Or are they faked chromic map reflections? Really like the effect of the tranlucent plastic-y parts too.
Sweet work. Really.

Total Quality! That is one amazing render. Looks like Johhny5 gone futuristic. The lighting is good, nice testures, and simple but effective colours. Surely it has some commercial use, like advertising a PC game? Or is that a sell-out?
