Description So I'm working on a new project. A book actually, but I like drawing the characters and some of their situations because it helps me to visualize and understand them. The art series itself is going to be called "How to Be Orc" or some variation thereof, as it will depict the characters interacting in some way that further explains orcs, who they are, and their culture.

This story is basically a romantic comedy between an intimidating Orc king (Vargan,) and a geeky human girl from the modern world (Ghorza -her real name is Jenny, but Vargan didn't like that so he gave her an Orc name.) On the surface it seems like a Beauty and the Beast story, and ostensibly it is, but not in the way one might think.   I think of them less like the Beast and Belle, and more like Shrek and Fiona. The story isn't really about Ghorza accepting Vargan's looks, it's about her accepting her own. There aren't a lot of interesting stories about nerd girls out there, and even less about ones in their late 20's and early 30's. And of the ones that do exist, they typically follow the same formula: geek girl with self-confidence issues, meets someone important, they give her a make-over and suddenly she becomes confident because she'd hot. (I'm looking at YOU, Princess Diaries...) These stories all send a similar message: being a nerd is undesirable, and men won't want to date you unless you're pretty, so get with it! *Vomits violently.* No. Just no. I want a story where the nerd girl stays a nerd girl, but becomes comfortable with it and gains confidence by learning to love who she is. From there she realizes she was beautiful all along- whether she fits in with society's standards of beauty or not.
But more about the plot...
Ghorza, a 29-year-old nerd girl who dreams of magic and romantic adventures, has been struggling with strange, seemingly delirious episodes for several months, that not even her therapist can explain. She worries she's having a nervous break down and takes some time off from work to get herself together. But after one particularly bad attack, she finds herself actually transported to the fantasy world of elves, halflings, and, of course, orcs that she's been seeing in her dreams. Having been captured by human mercenaries, intending to sell her into slavery, she is "rescued" by an army of orcs, namely the orc king (Vargan) as they raid the mercenaries' camp in search of his kidnapped brother. In exchange for her rescue, Ghorza consents to becoming Vargan's human pet. Typical fantasy trope: orcs and humans don't typically get along in this world. But unlike a lot of other fantasy stories the humans are NOT the good guys, here. Quite the opposite, actually, and have been fighting with the orcs over land and resource disputes for over a hundred years. But Vargan gives Ghorza a chance because she was nice to his brother while both of them were captured by the human mercenaries.
There's more to the story, and I'll reveal bits of it along with future concept art, but there's the basic overview.

Line art - traditional media. Coloring/shading - Photoshop CC

Yay! That's exactly what I'm trying to convey with this story. It'll be funny, and lighthearted at some moments, but very deep and intense at others.

You are alive!!!!  *Pokes, pokes! Nudge, nudge! Examines for bruises...*

Ah... the story sounds pretty cool. What really gets me is the things noted around the end: Vargan taking her as a pet because she was nice to his brother while they were captives. 'Very interesting!!! That I wouldn't mind seeing some pictures of... not necessarily having to be in comic form, but Ghorza and the brother meeting and Vargan going, "I won't kill you then. You become human pet."

OMG! Yes, I want to draw that now!
Thank you for commenting! I've missed you! I'm glad to be back. I had kind of a creative dry spell for a long time there, and I think I'm just now getting my spark back. I'll post the other concept art I've done in the next few days. Happy New Year!

Awesome. While it might take me a while to get used to this Orc style ('been reading a webcomic which has an awesome Orc character in it), I definitely like Ghorza's design. 'Love the hand "comparisons", too. Hands can say a lot. <3

Creative dry spells. *Eyes some of my unfinished stories that will likely remain unfinished forever...* Yep... I know how that is like. Is that the case for your previous works, or are those up in the air?

Hm, do you mind if I ask you what is "off" to you about Vargan's design? I just want as much feedback on people's impressions, as possible. I tried to emulate other designs of Orcs without being too derivative. I want my Orcs to be rather hairy, and beastly. More like WoW orcs, and less like Warhammer. My interpretation of Orcs is that they are sort of tribal, and very war-like, but not complete savages -unlike how the rest of the world sees them. I've been doing some research into Spartans, and also Vikings, as a means of helping me construct their culture. Also do you mind if I ask what is the name of the webcomic you're reading?

And I'm sorry to say that I've abandoned most of my previous works for the time being. I love OLAM, but I decided it was time I started focusing on my original works more. : /

Oh, it has nothing to do with being "off" so much as when you are introduced to something and stick with it for a while, it becomes the image you expect. For example, there is the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Of my eldest brother's day the first thought would be of the animation of the late 1970s. For other the image that comes to mind is the live-action of the early 2000s. Thus, when I first think of orcs I think huskier build, more pronounced foreheads due to what has stuck with me the longest visually. Thus, the get used to the slight various differences of artistic style.

The webcomic is titled Daughter of the Lilies by Meg Syverud.

*Nods in regards to the past works* All things come to an end. Some abruptly and thus unfinished, some are finished and are of good length and some take forever until they are finished. *Shrugs*

Ah, I understand then. Thank you very much for clarifying either way. Like I said, I just want as much feedback as possible on the two characters. Call it a "field test," maybe? LOL

I took a look at the webcomic. I really do like the writer's orc character -he's tough and scary, but kind of adorable too.

The adorable regarding him is really there in her side things. They usually are sprinkled about her tumblr, twitter and DA. Followers consider him the Orc Dad.
