Description
This cake was for an Alice in Wonderland themed party for my sister’s 25th b-day. ^^ I made the chess pieces from white and dark chocolate, the frosting is made from scratch, the cake itself is from a box (If I’m spending all the time on the frosting, I don’t have time to make the cake from scratch ^_^). An unfortunate issue was that as the evening went on, the cake started to collapse under the weight of the chess pieces. The cookies in the background were from a bakery, so no, I didn’t make the fancy, cute cookies.
----------------------
For our birthdays, my sister and I have weeklong celebrations; she plans mine and I plan hers. For her 25th b-day, the theme I did was Alice in Wonderland/Chess. Each day there was a pile of twenty-five something (sprinkles, buttons, marshmallows, etc.), a special thing for the day (a gift, a game night with family, a trip to Toronto, etc.), and a card with one of the Sir John Tenniel Alice illustrations on one side and a piece of prose written by me, in the style of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, that was a clue to the day’s surprise. The prose had blank spaces in it that could be solved by the pieces I arranged on the chess board every day.
After the week was over (her birthday was on a Tuesday), I surprised her the following Saturday by throwing her an Alice in Wonderland themed tea/b-day party, complete with party goers in Alice costumes.

Haha, yeah, you should have distributed the pieces over the top so that the pieces won't fall off.

I found this and haven't stopped thinking about it!! Totally amazing. Did you use a recipe that I could find online? Or you'd be willing to share?
I even posted a link in my blog to this deviation. I love chess and I love baking so it's perfect.
Do you blog about baking or cooking at all? Have you made any other intricate foods like this?

Absolutely! ^_^ My sister (and I) are huge fans of both books, so for her birthweek (we celebrate birthweeks not birthdays) last year, I made the theme Alice in Wonderland/Through the looking glass.
Every day there was a card with a John Tenniel illustration and a short piece of prose that I wrote in the style of the books. The prose was a clue to the activities of the day. There were blanks in the prose, which could be solved by a very simple puzzle I set up daily on my chess board.
Some activities for the week included: a tea party and a journey to which she didn't know the destination.

Oh wow, that sounds like so much fun. I would like to do that
I'm not that great with English prose. Hopefully the creative writing class i'm about to take this spring, will help me write some neat things
Oh well if you're ever in the LA area there is this neat Cafe called Royal T and they are having this neat Alice in Wonderland event where everyone dresses up and eat from a special Alice menu. I wanted to to be the White queen but I don't think everyone will recognize me...

I have no idea. o.O I went all out for her 25th, so she's stated she doesn't expect anything too big for next year. Perhaps I should just take a few years and do little b-day weeks and then do another uber one for her 30th? ^_^
