Description Here are the innards of the cake. It took way too much effort to do the checkerboard pattern in a square cake (all the kits out there that I found are for circle cakes). O.o There is probably an easier way to do it, but I muddled along the best that I could. The finished product came out rather nicely, but the process was quite messy. ^_^

The cookies in the background were from a bakery, so no, I didn’t make the fancy, cute cookies.
----------------------

For our birthdays, my sister and I have weeklong celebrations; she plans mine and I plan hers. For her 25th b-day, the theme I did was Alice in Wonderland/Chess. Each day there was a pile of twenty-five something (sprinkles, buttons, marshmallows, etc.), a special thing for the day (a gift, a game night with family, a trip to Toronto, etc.), and a card with one of the Sir John Tenniel Alice illustrations on one side and a piece of prose written by me, in the style of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, that was a clue to the day’s surprise. The prose had blank spaces in it that could be solved by the pieces I arranged on the chess board every day.

After the week was over (her birthday was on a Tuesday), I surprised her the following Saturday by throwing her an Alice in Wonderland themed tea/b-day party, complete with party goers in Alice costumes.

Sorry for the delay in reply. Yes, the chess pieces are white and dark chocolate, so we ate them all up! You can buy a chess piece candy/chocolate mold on amazon.com.

prismkitty In reply to AquaAngelus [2008-08-15 16:48:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm sure there was probably a more professional way to do it, but all I did was take two cakes, cut them into squares, stack them up, and then frost it to seal it together. The fact that the cake was so moist and the weight of the chess pieces kinda sealed all the squares together. Next time, I want to experiment with baking it in the squares. ^^

Yeah, almond or hazlenut. Almond for a blander taste, hazelnut if you want the nutty taste. You have to do a little re-shuffling of things, like baking soda instead of baking powder, and cornflour usually plays its part too!

Yeah, I make a lot of almond based things! But sometimes it would be nice to just order cake!

I didn't know about almond based things being a substitute for wheat based things. Thank for the info. ^_^

that must have taken some patience!!!! I wish I could eat wheat

Yeah, it did take some patience. I'm sorry you can't eat wheat. Perhaps you could find something non-wheat-based to frost? The frosting has no wheat in it and is very tasty. ^_^

Yay! Thank you! But the process wasn't as amazing as the finished product looks. Basically, I baked two cakes, cut them up into squares, built the new cake, then frosted it immediately to seal it all together. The fact that the cake was moist helped glue it all togther I think.

Next time, I'm going to experiement with a mold to bake it in the checked pattern. ^^

Thanks! It's really not that hard. I took one cake decorating class (one day a week for a month). I found the molds for the chocolate chess pieces on amazon, and they were pretty cheap. ^_^
