WELL. THIS is totally something relevant to all the projects that I really should be working on!! o_O
I've been making games in Flash for years, but I'm interested in switching over to Unity since it seems better in essentially every way! So I'm in the process of learning how to use it. I mean, we're being taught it at university too, but I've learned more about it from a day of self-teaching than I did from several weeks of lessons, so... well. That's how I prefer to learn, I suppose.
Anyway, I want to make RPGs in Unity, so I thought that rather than diving in and trying to make a GOOD game without any experience at all, I'd first try to make some really basic sort of thing where I play around with how best to implement certain RPG features. I seem to be unable to do things like that without having a clear plot, setting, story or whatever though (I've done things like 'circle quest!' in the past where basic shapes were used instead of art assets, but it felt so hollow), so I thought about my old games to see what I might be able to use.
I remembered Acorn Nose, the protagonist from 'Timid Cervid', which I was working on a while back but never finished for various reasons. I thought I'd reuse the character to save that design work from going to waste! So I made this really basic 'low poly' model of her that I could use in Unity! Yes!
I'm still very new to modelling; this is the first humanoid character I've done. I'm still fond of this 'low poly' style, where you try to keep the number of triangles as low as possible, rather than adding tons of detail and smoothness and such... It's better for games (particularly apps) performance-wise, but I also like the look of it in general. In a way, it's almost like the 3D equivalent of pixel art or something!
This was my first time actually adding an animation rig thing to a model... and I don't think that I did it very well! Still, it was interesting having a model that I could actually pose for the first time! Hopefully that's something I'll improve with over time.
Anyway, I might do some other characters like this! Possibly!!
(Ugh... Since this is animated, deviantART won't let me include it in the Digital Art -> 3D -> Characters -> Female gallery? That's so annoying!)
