When people out there base Sonic's bad reputation on the internet when the people who really mattered spoke with their wallets and actually bought and played the games. This is mostly for those who deluded themselves into thinking every game since Colors saved the franchise when Generations was the only successful game since then and everything else should be hated because someone told them to.Related content

I remember someone in dA saying that his friends were all playing Mario but he was upset because he was the only one playing Sonic and everyone made fun of him.

Don't know what the point of telling me this was, Sonic fans have been made fun of for years. If anything you've only given another example of Nintendo fanboyism.
Scratch that, I've now had a look at what I've said on the meme, though this is not common real life practice and does not take away from my statement. There's always anomalies.

Except Sonic sales have been going down over the years since SA1 and Sonic Colors was what brought Sonic back into people's eyes.
Just because you hate the game doesn't change the fact people labelled it as Sonic's grand return to being a decent series worth looking into again.

Adventure 1 and 2 were on a failing console and STILL sold more than Sonic 3 & Knuckles on the highly successful Genesis
Heroes and Unleashed are 2 of the highest selling Sonic games of all time

I can relate to that, I do like Sonic and I have fond memories of him. Sonic SatAM is after all the best incarnation of Sonic after all, but I do find lots of value in most of the Genesis, Dreamcast, and handheld games, along with the old Archie universe and the Fleetway comics. I can even find enjoyment with games like CD, Heroes, Black Knight, and Unleashed. I even like the fan-made games like Before the Sequel, After the Sequel, and Sonic Nebulous, because Before the Sequel and After the Sequel add to the Sonic lore, while Sonic Nebulous is based around Sonic SatAM.
And even though I have my gripes with Shadow, Secret Rings, and Sonic 06, at least I can respect what they tried to do. Even if the mission structure in Shadow was annoying, the control style in Secret Rings could be better, and Sonic 06 was a glitch-filled mess, at least THEIR stories had PAYOFF. I wouldn't mind some remakes to clean up the problems found in those games, if it's possible for those games to be remade.
It's Colors, Lost World, and the Boom Games I don't have much respect for. Most of them are playable, but they were just boring, because their stories have NO payoff what-so-ever. A very good example is in Colors, that mind-control cannon was just pointless. Plus, the humor itself in those games were just cringe-worthy. And while we're on the subject: Roger Craig Smith is the WORST Sonic voice period, don't get me wrong: he does a great job with his other roles like his role as Batman in Arkham Origins, but I don't think he's well-suited for the Blue Blur himself. I just don't see any reason for these games to be remade, they have NO value to me.

I was taking a survey earlier about movies and how much I wanted to see them. One of the questions asked me about how interested I would be in seeing the 2018 Sonic movie and it gave me details of what MIGHT be the plot of it. I took a screenshot of it:

EDIT: The link isn't working. I will try and get a better picture later. Basically, it said that sonic was a hedgehog gifted with super speed, but he got tired of the farm area he was living in. To him, it was too slow-paced for his lifestyle. Somehow, he discovered a mysterious planet called Earth and learned what it's like to be a hero when battling Dr. Eggman, a person who threatens both worlds.

I can generally agree with this. General audiences have fond memories with Sonic and have always seen him as a cool and appealing character. I know this from my everyday interactions with people at my college.

That's like I say the media also has something to do with it as Sonic 06 is ALWAYS bought up when a bad Sonic game comes out and someone needs something to blame for the subjective negatives of a game. Who remembers seeing "WORSE THAN SONIC 06" Every fucking time Rise of Lyric was bought up. The hate for Sonic exist as a phantom to the internet that is only now letting people openly mock the series that has taken too many beatings.

Generations has died down a lot, even the modding community is dead in the water while ironicly modding for the adventure games is still ongoing now and then.

generations itself isn't even as successful as some like to think, it just continued the downward spiral that happened after colours.
