Description i have had alot of people in the past either ask me how to draw raptors, or when will i make another tutorial. so here is a tutorial on raptors. grrrr. i hope its understandable and stuff.

This will prolly be edited a few times, i plan to add a new section every now and then. i am open for critique from those who perhaps have had even more experience with dromaeosaurids.

i am always available for redlining.

EDIT LIST:
6/24/10
-added in the halluxes to avoid confusion
-edited a minor wing feather error pointed out by ixerin

I useed to only imagine Raptors as their old dipiction, but since see the more modern idea of raptors I've prefer it to the old design. It helps illustrate how bizzarr some dinosaurs could be.

I'm faving this. But not because I want to draw raptors properly.
I'm faving them because the things you listed as wrong gave me cool ideas.

Funny thing is, I love the real raptor hands. The fake, broken type just looks wrong to me.

PsyrapMafia In reply to TheLOAD [2010-10-20 06:48:22 +0000 UTC]

I noticed that about the feathered part. The older, scaled raptors always seemed somehow naked to me XD

TheLOAD In reply to PsyrapMafia [2010-10-20 19:32:56 +0000 UTC]

Non-feathered raptors are just plain weird. But still, not my biggest Dino pet peeve. That honor belongs to things that still call T. rex a Carnosaur.

I didn't know about skull thing! Unbelievable! I'm outdated D: So Deinonychus had more Velociraptorish skull... That makes much more sense! I have to update my books and pictures I've gathered so far...
Hey, I like broken wrist syndrome :] Even it it's bad I used to them because of old dino-books in my childchood. Hm, in deeph tough I think I saw similar front 'paws' in Raptor Red Maybe not so boken but definitely not so straigh as in right example.
And the neck reminds me about one annoying comment on YT, lol. That was random.

Anyways this looks good and this is the first time I have actually learned something about raptors. Point for you. I will fav this.

Dr-XIII In reply to ??? [2010-09-15 05:07:38 +0000 UTC]

Okay. Are MY Raptor's Arms and Legs too long? And his body a bit short? Or Did I nailed it. It's how I draw MY Deinonychosaurs, so I was asking if I violated any rules of this tutorial.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PsyrapMafia In reply to Dr-XIII [2010-09-15 14:16:46 +0000 UTC]

The segment between the heel and toes is far too long. It should always be the shortest segment on the leg :]

examples: [link] [link] [link]

I would also make the claws a bit smaller. Every thing else I would give the OK to :]

Hope that helped.

Dr-XIII In reply to PsyrapMafia [2010-09-15 19:35:35 +0000 UTC]

Okay. So I've exaggerated on the claws' size, and made the raptor look more like a Ratite than a Raptor. Sorry. And thanks for the critique.

Excellent, very clear reference. I should note that the old (and very wrong) Deinonychus/JP!Raptor with the big giant head and kangaroo hands is still on display at the Harvard Museum of Natural History -- with no explanation. Very strange.

I really appreciate this tutorial! It helps clear up a lot of "raptor" misconceptions. Especially the tail thing and the wrist thing. I, personally, had a hard time with dromaeosaurid wrists, until I read somewhere to just imagine it like the dinosaur is clapping.

this is really awesome! now i can see the differences more clearly. the 2 compairsons you did were really helpful.

basically this would be the super outdated raptor skeleton:
[link]

and i'm assuming this is the more correct:
[link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PsyrapMafia In reply to RennyRensaur [2010-08-05 17:20:27 +0000 UTC]

that is somewhat correct although the first link is the outdated Deinonychus and the second link is a semi-updated Velociraptor

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RennyRensaur In reply to PsyrapMafia [2010-08-05 19:14:47 +0000 UTC]

hahah that's good to know then. is there any decent sites out there that has an updated ref like yours or would that still require more searching? because i almost can't tell any big difference now with the second link and your tutorial as of now. then again i don't catch details too easily. -_-

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PsyrapMafia In reply to RennyRensaur [2010-08-06 20:20:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh, in the second one (the velociraptor skeleton) it is the skull that is a bit off from modern-day reconstruction.
