Description
i have had alot of people in the past either ask me how to draw raptors, or when will i make another tutorial. so here is a tutorial on raptors. grrrr. i hope its understandable and stuff. This will prolly be edited a few times, i plan to add a new section every now and then. i am open for critique from those who perhaps have had even more experience with dromaeosaurids.
i am always available for redlining.
EDIT LIST:
6/24/10
-added in the halluxes to avoid confusion
-edited a minor wing feather error pointed out by ixerin

Great tutorial, I'm sorry to admit I didn't know a few things you mentioned here o_O Now that I do, though, perhaps I can draw a proper raptor

I love the way you've compared the right and wrong. It makes it so much easier for me to see how it should look. That and some of the wrongs are what I do, and since you compared, I can recognize that.

I must say, since I'm used to the wrong form that the right one looks rather ugly in comparison to the "old-fashioned" one xD.
Nice tutorial though I like it :3

If only this came earlier, I had to do the hard parts of learning the anatomny when creating a raptor character... but this makes it a whole lot easier.

1stly, your raptor dino tutorial is the best 1 I've seen on DA out of all 2 of them (more details, fewer mistakes). This is the other 1 I've seen on DA: [link]
2ndly, congrats on finally getting right the arrangement of raptor dino wing feathers!

Yea the wing configuration is the one thing i've always kept drawing incorrectly in the past apparently.

Thanks. <3 This helped me a lot while I was drawing a Wyvern. I know they aren't raptors but... you'd think they'd have a similar design.

What's wrong with feet in "funky..." section? I see almost no difference in the last three (more precisely, I don't know where to look at)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
PsyrapMafia In reply to felix-leg [2010-06-26 18:38:21 +0000 UTC]
by the last three i assume you mean the bottom row. from left to right, the first one has too many toes, the second one has an over exaggerated claw, and the third one is mammalian based instead of reptilian based.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
felix-leg In reply to PsyrapMafia [2010-06-27 14:25:45 +0000 UTC]
All right, now it's more clear . Maybe except the last - here I wonder how far can I go with these feet that they still will not been looking mammalian
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
PsyrapMafia In reply to felix-leg [2010-06-28 19:14:56 +0000 UTC]
Well in general, to avoid a mammalian appearance, the toes should be round, long, and smooth with thick claws that come out the top of the toes, where the scaling ends.

This was really helpful. I think the part that caused me most headache have always been the feet. I just want to give the toes some bone detail, and at the zoo I spend much time staring at bird feet - the toes are really just round and smooth when the bird stands.

SageKorppi In reply to Tacimur [2010-06-25 00:37:55 +0000 UTC]
You should check out seriema feet for reference. They even hold their inner toe up like a dromaeosaur!
Here's a photo I took at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: [link]

This will also prove useful in remaking Jurassic Park.

Jurassic Park, while awesome, ruined the design of raptors for over a decade.
I still pout when I watch Jurassic Park 3. Quills? That's shallow.
