The 'fourth wall' reffers to reality, like when you're playing a videogame, there's the wall behind the character, and the walls on the sides, but technically the fourth wall to the room is the screen between yourself and the game.
"breaking" said 'fourth wall' refers to the act of letting the characters in game realize they're in a game and making a joke that reminds the player of the game they exist, or the fact they're playing a game (or watching a movie, or reading a book, anything that reminds you of reality and breaks you away from the story world that you'd inveloped yourself in)
