Text Tutorial made a while ago for beginners at Photoshop. It explains you how to make a basic 'moving' text with a gradient overlay.The outcome can be previewed here: [link]
Made this one with Photoshop 7.0, but there will only be slight changes if you want to try this with more recent versions

should work quite the same.
Are you experienceing problems?
I have CS3 now, and as far as I know, not too many things should have changed

then you probably haven't set the gradient options as they should..
When you look at the tutorial, at a certain moment I say 'Now take out the gradient tool and use these options:'
Make sure your options are set exactly as shown at that part (y)
