I've read through your questions, but I still don't know the answer to my own question: (I'm sorry you get so many questions: but I swear it has nothing to do with the inking or line or pen!)

In the first step: when you use the gradient tool, how did you get the color of the blue? I'm using CS4, and I know how to change the colors, but the light blue is not an option: so how do/can I make my own custom gradient?

Thank you so much for your time!

this might totally sound dumb but i'm having some problems with the pen tool. i used it once and its been a while since i didnt use it. the thing is that when i go on my lines and create de shape i want, it fills entirely with black. but i just want to do the lines..not to fill them..
hot do i do this? xD

I hope it's not too late to ask any questions?

First off the gradient map adjustment. I can't seem to figure out how to change the color? I've always scanned my sketches in as greyscale, so maybe that effects it?

And the pen tool. It's easier to understand in Illustrator... I've managed to get it so it doesn't create shapes, but there's no thickness to it, nor a varation in thickness. How do i fix that?

Would the pen tool work better for thickness//variation in thickness if i were to use a tablet? (My pen broke for my tablet, so i haven't been able to use it lately. Me very sad. ;__; )

I hope you reply soon. I want to try inking on Photoshop and try coloring my pictures. <3 Thanks for your help!

are you scan you pencils into greyscale swich to RGB. then do the gradient map adjusment.

i dont knwo much about illustrator so i cant help ya there.

i never uses my tablet for inking, so i just ink with my mouse and vector out my inks.

I love your tutorial, but, I have a question. Every time I use the pen tool it keeps making a shape path that fills in the foreground color. How do I get this to stop? Am I being a total idiot?

Thanks for your time, and your gallery is phenomenal.

make sure you have the path option selected instead of shape layers. it should be the second button at the very top. i hope that helps! and thanks for the kind words! <3!!

OH! And how do you use your layers? Do you seperate your lineart before you ink or...?

Thanks!

Hey Py Can I ask a couple questions please?
Right, it's about the inking part. So far, I've always use the normal brush tool and ink my stuff free hand. I've never used the pen tool before so what I would like to know is whether

1. Is it much easier to use the pen tool?

2. When you the draw the path, do fill it up using strokes or?

3. How long does it take for you to ink your art and how long does it take to finish a piece?

Ok, Thanks in advance
-Kaminaga

pyawakit In reply to Kaminaga [2006-06-13 04:21:04 +0000 UTC]

people asked the same questions, so alot of them have them all been addressed with my advice.

1. for me, its all same in the end.
2. i fill path both shape and stroke.
3. depends of the size of the pic, but really no time at all for me.

Thanks for the tutorial! I do have one question however - line weight - how do you decide where to make the lines heaviest? I think the line weight can make an ink job look significantly better or worse.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pyawakit In reply to asiah [2006-06-09 21:37:39 +0000 UTC]

you have to consider the form, how close and/or far away it is. like if something is closer, you'd inking thinker and farther away thiner. i hope that helps <3!

Holy crap, this tutorial is really awesome! I guess I feel like the rest concerning the pen tool in inking it. Not that I have a total problem with it, but inking with it would seem like a really long time. How long does it take you? As for the colors, I find them phenomenal. I'm still practicing my shading skills (very new to the concept both digital and traditional)....I keep causing them to look flat instead of realistic/3D like yours? Anymore suggestions of color and shading relations? 'Preciate the tutorial, it's very informative!

pyawakit In reply to mrcontroversial [2006-06-08 23:45:30 +0000 UTC]

inking takes me no time at all really, like i think this whole thing took about an hour maybe an hour and a half. as for coloring i'd recommend trying to study rendering on like forms. try the ball and the lamp trick i posted.

When you color, do you have the brush on full opacity, because you got that faded look and it looks like maybe you use a slightly lower opacity then 100% in your coloring. Just wondering.

Other then that this is a really nice tutorial, simple, but nice. The Pen tool is hard to use in Photoshop I feel, it seems different then the way its used in Illustrator.
