Description
First deviation of 2008.Man, this took forever to do.
This is a kind of depiction of disappointment I faced in the introductory tutorials last week in university.
C#, urrgggh. What is wrong with C++? Seems like all of my game related modules are deliberately avoiding C++, the industry standard programming language. One is using C#, a mockery of Java. The other is using plain old C.
Those two are either side of C++. Seems like all the professional grade programming I have learned has been in my own time rather than class. That just seems to be getting in the way now. This is a mockery of justice/education.
Enjoy.

I wonder what caused your uni to focus on C sharp. (I may not know how to program, but I already knew that most stuff these days seems to be programmed in C++.)
Good comic by the way. I love the expressions. Brilliantly done on the body language as well. You make your point clearly. It made me lchuckle. (not at your misfortune, mind.)
And hopefully the office staff at your uni isn't as incompetent as the office staff at mine. (granted the professors are great, but administration is such a nightmare that my friends and I developed the term "Layered Bureaucracy" to describe the foolishness of it all.)
EvCC is currently building a new wing to house more students they don't even have parking for. What's worse is that they tore up half the existing parking spaces, and several key footpaths in the process of this tomfoolery. Oy...

We have 11 year old keyboards but the uni think it is better to spend money on attracting media studies students by building a TV studio.
Also after that they are now re-cladding the main building to match the other buildings. We still have old keyboards and crappy computers in the computing department.

I take it these are not "good" 11 year-old keyboards. (Good as in IBM Type-M quality.)
Letters are worn off, keys require hard pounding to actuate, etc.?
Actually my favorite keyboard is a 20 year old GRiD I picked up from a charity shop for $2. Heavy (1.8Kg!!) oweing to a 3mm steel backplane, and sturdy PVS casing. Kinda curious as to how it ended up at Value Village, given that GRiD only ever did DoD contracts...
Tough SOB, coffee-spill proof, lovely electromechanical keys, could cause serious damage used as a Mourning Star, etc.
Anyway, enough rambling about keyboards.
I'm sorry to hear that your college does not seem to be well managed either.
The whole "expand without meeting current needs" philosophy just seems like bad business.
Isn't going to college hellish enough without having to deal with underfunded departments, and worn-out equipment? (It would seems that bureaucracy is often synonymous with sadism.)
Speaking of education; did you ever find out why your professors were dodging C++, or was the question dodged?
Hopefully your classes are going better now.

Well apparently it is a mixture of Lecturer competency, the expectation that we should be able to adapt code by now and having to pander to those that for some reason have not touched c++ even though they are doing a hard core games/graphics module.
Apparently they have to keep modules open and accessible to as many students as possible to be 'fair'.

I fear it is stuck in the 80's. If I can get enough people together I'll get a signed one written.

yeah pyro this is officially awesome, you should really make a formal complaint
really good expression, key to a great comic is that it reads without needing dialogue, which this does very well : )

Wow, thanks allot dude. Means allot coming from someone of your calibre.
I will try to say something on Wednesday when I meet with my FYP supervisor who also teaches the course.

How the heck do you even say "C#"?
Poor Pyro. My university degree is useless too. (cough theatre studies) But I like your character. Does he always wear avaitor glasses to programming class?

I say it "C Hash" in jest as the sharp notation is also known as a hash symbol here in England.
Also i'm silly

That's not silly. It's quite sensible.

They are like surgical attached or something.
Also it is pronounced 'C Sharp' like the musical notation.

You know what i think of the comic, so why don't you ask a teacher or explain your predicament as to the uselessness of C#?
Do you C#? Then you're under arrest!

Because the idea of programming a console seems awesome. I might hate allot of console games, doesn't mean I won't like making stuff for it.

Is it a general university where you're studying computer science or a college with a game programing courses? I think most university avoid teaching C++ for game because of the high cost it involve getting the IDE for it. Unless they want to teach C++ in linux, which some university avoid.
I know that, in my end, I did most of my programming in Java, with some class (3d for instance) in C++ on Linux. And even there, with the lack of 'Free' GUI interface, it was a pain to code.

Most of the machines in my university have Visual Studio on them- an IDE that can be used for C++ development.
I am not sure what you are on about in regards to the differences most degrees are studied at universities here in the UK. My university theoretically specializes in computer science.

Dragoniade In reply to PyroTeamkill [2008-01-20 16:04:35 +0000 UTC]
That must be a difference between UK and Canada. Here, what we teach at the University is mostly the theoric aspect: the math, how it work, the turing machine concept, data structure, vectoring, etc. They aren't specialized in a particular domain, such as web design, 3d programming, game programming.
If someone want to specialize, in gaming for instance, then they go at college instead where they teach you everything that is specific to that domain. You would get 3d programming and modeling, but not networking or the other skills required for the other aspect of the game.
That's sort of why we didn't get any 'gaming' specific teaching, only the basic. Our 3D classes ended up being coding a renderer, moving a lamp and moving a camera around.

Ah right. Well back in the day there used to be Universities and Polytechnics in the UK- Polytechnics dealt with theory and practicle education. The universities were more academic and research. However most Polytechnics were changed to university status (no idea why or any exact dates). The UK just has universities now although the separation between the old universities and the other ones in terms of academic teaching remained the same. Some people refer to the former Polytechnics as New Universities.
I am attending a former polytechnic so the stuff they teach is more practicle but they do have some academic stuff going in and a research department.
In the UK 'college' usually refers to an institute that teaches a level of education higher than highschool but below any kind of degree. It is usally free to attend too for those that go straight into it from school. Some schools even offer college level study to their students who wish to remain at the school.
