Description
Finally, the long-awaited Ax Cat reference that I have stopped being lazy for long enough to finish! Even so, it's still a bit half-assed...Any ideas for stuff to add? I know some of my adopters have been waiting for this to come out, and I'm sorry I took so long. If you have any questions, ask them, and I'll post them in this comment for everyone to see.
They need a new name...
Speaking of names, the scientific name means "Flat Head Egg Eater"

Questions-
Q: Does the hood/shelf/whatever it's called on their head greatly reduce their visual range? It looks like they can't look up, and some of their forward vision looks like it is interrupted as well.
A: They don't really rely on vision for navigation. Mostly they use their eyes for identifying locations based on the ground cover/soil type. The infrared eye can see 180˚ in front of the animal. Mostly, the cats rely on smell and electrical receptors in the bonnet, like a shark.
Q: Is this an open species?
A: YES! Ax Cats are now open to anyone. Please read through my rules journal before you create your Ax Cat [link]

I can only find information about ax cats on deviantart, is this some sort of randomly made up creature that deviants draw or is this creature in a book or something ?

It's an old original species of mine that I opened up for people to make their own! I don't use them much at all any more but some people seem to still enjoy them

//sighs wistfully// They are beautiful and elegant and deadly and I love them. Their muscles are just so well defined! And I love the paws- wow. And the TAILS!
//rolls away// ahh these are too cool...
Would bronze/gold/metallic colors be considered too bright? I'm not exactly sure about the texture of their skin- It looks like it could either be scaly or leathery like a lizard's.

I have a question. Are these at all based off the Ax-Hounds in the book The Way of Kings? They seem a little similar. It's a good book by the way. I could be totally wrong here though.

No, I'm afraid I've never heard of that. Sounds interesting, though. Is it good?
I named them Ax Cats because decent names are not a thing that happens with me XD

Well nice art anyway, and ya it is a good book, one of my favorites. Its set in a pretty unique fantasy world.

No problem, and okay. I also have a suggestion: you should make a free Ax Cat Lineart. :3

Iiiiii'm not really a believer in bases and such. I might make a sort of coloring page, but it would be a specific piece and not something you'd find on a ref sheet. I think people should try their hand at drawing their own Ax Cat first.

Certainly interested in drawing a realistic recreation of these; they look fascinating. (: I might be bugging you with anatomical questions soon.

Sure thing! Note me with any questions you have. Although if you'd like to draw them, I would recommend using the updated ref. [link]

O o o so I can make my own? I rly want one with black skin and blue stipes/ brindling T-T Is that possible for the species? I'd also never claim the species as my own pwease? :3

Pythosart In reply to Aiko-Shiri [2011-12-09 02:35:42 +0000 UTC]
Yes, you may make your own. I'm afraid I'm going to have to say no to the black with blue stripes, but you could go for a dark gray or brown with "blue" (cool gray) brindling. Keep in mind that brindling is a different pattern from stripes. It looks like this: [link]

Kk now that I see it the brindling is actually alot cooler to me I'll show you. My cat when I'm done.

I'm afraid not. I open adoptable slots occasionally, but I generally prefer to keep them a closed species.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Gwan-Thewi In reply to Pythosart [2011-04-26 23:33:36 +0000 UTC]
Really? Because I see lots of people who made their own, and they weren't the ones you opened for adoption.Hm.
Well, I was trying to draw one in class today, and i like my design better. Can I keep that and give you credit?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Pythosart In reply to Gwan-Thewi [2011-04-27 00:37:51 +0000 UTC]
That shouldn't happen. There are people who I've given them to due to friendship and people who do fan art. I'm fine if you draw one and call it "fan art" as long as you don't claim it as your species or character.

Dogs look aggressive, don't they? Well. Real dogs. I don't consider any breed that couldn't survive on its own in the wild a true dog. I call them "cockroaches" or "mops". XD
Thank you!

Haha i can see your point there, thats probably why the wild dogs (especially wolves) are so demonised by people =L
No worries
