Description
Title speaks for itself. Here's what the letters are for:
A: These are different examples of the types of layouts the horns can be in, from 1-8. If you're not familiar with the species already, the number of horns on a Sand Drake can range from one to eight, and the drake's social rank depends on this. Two horns is the lowest, Eight the highest, and one is extremely rare. One-horned drakes are believed to be demigods, despite their usually frail form.
B: Demonstrates how the triple eyelid works. Each opening has a filter on it that allows only one spectrum through. When the eyelid is relaxed, the drake appears to have three eyes and can see the visible spectrum. The filters are as follows: Extreme amounts of light, Low visible light, infrared.
C: A sand drake's colors are usually complimentary. The base color is always subdued and/or earthy. No bright colors anywhere but the eyes and interior of the mouth.
D: An average drake is depicted here. They can be much leaner or somewhat more muscular, depending on heredity and environmental factors.
E: Front paw
F: Hind paw
[EDIT] Just realize the 5 horns one actually has three horns. Whoops. I'll draw in the other two when I update the ref. For now, Ezelix is a good reference for 5 horns.

Q: Are these an open species?
A: No. I'm keeping them on a friends-only basis, and even then, only with my express permission. Do NOT ask me if you can make one. I will say no. You can, however, make fan art of the existing ones, which can be found in #Toria-Art 's gallery.

I'm aware. That was a bit of an accident XD
That varies from clan to clan and individual to individual. Some treat lower ranks as equals, while others can be quite abusive towards them. One clan is actually made up entirely of low-ranking Drakes.

How would say, Ezelix treat a loner two-horn(Meaning it travels for itself, mostly away from others) in comparison to most sand drakes?

Pythosart In reply to Fenris97 [2011-10-04 22:33:15 +0000 UTC]
Ezelix is a loner among his kind to begin with (hangs out in the spaceports a lot), but would probably be fairly snooty towards a lower ranking male. He'd probably be nice towards a female regardless.
He may have more respect for another loner even if they were of a lower rank simply because he would appreciate the resolve required to stay away from clan life.

Would a high ranking drake (7-8 Horns?) attempt to attack/subdue a low ranking one (2 horns) if the low ranking one was attempting to attack/kill a higher ranking one (4,5,6)?
What would be the punishment for doing so, if the ''judge'' was a sand drake?
How does the rank system ''work''? I mean, what would you call the rank of one with 8 horns? One with 2?
Thank you very much that you take time to answer my questions!

Pythosart In reply to Fenris97 [2011-10-05 04:53:52 +0000 UTC]
Almost certainly in most clans. That's like assaulting a police officer. And of course an attacked drake would most likely defend itself if it were able.
Punishment depends on the severity of a crime. The penalty for murder in most clans is exile, but the murder of an official (not all high-ranking drakes are officials, but nearly all officials are high ranking) would be met with death. Usually the murderer would be killed by the closest relative to the victim. Some clans are stricter than others, and some don't believe in the death penalty. Also, Drakes can only be judged by other Drakes. Allowing a human to decide the fate of a Drake is unheard of.
There's no real word for it, really. It's sort of an unspoken thing. Rank can determine privileges in society, governing or occupational positions, and of course the amount of weight an accusation or defense would carry in a court. They are very fair creatures for the most part, and believe in fair trial for anyone, but the voice of a high-ranking Drake would likely overshadow the voice of a low-ranking Drake.
Not at all! It helps me brainstorm.

How do drakes act towards ax cats?
Can an ax cat be dangerous towards a drake? Several drakes?
Are there size and/or strength differences between the ranks?
What rank would a drake have if the horn was one at the base and split up into two later?

Pythosart In reply to Fenris97 [2011-10-05 16:32:54 +0000 UTC]
gain, that goes by individual. For the most part they don't interact much in any case. An Ax Cat alone would have to get very lucky to defeat a Sand Drake (drakes are bigger, stronger, and much smarter), but a group could probably take one down. Again, though, I doubt an Ax Cat would attack a drake unless the drake was in the middle of its territory, threatening other Ax Cats, or straying too close to the cat's nest. Sand Drakes will rarely enter the heart of a territory unless they need to. Drakes are highly intelligent and will remember territorial borders and nest locations.
Not really, no. Body size goes by family or clan location (mountain dwellers are smaller and skinnier, desert dwellers are fairly large, plains dwellers are bigger with longer legs, jungle-dwellers are small and have a longer tail). Strength depends more on the individual's daily activities. Messengers would be very fast and nimble, and would have a lot of stamina, while bodyguards for the officials would likely be fairly muscular. Any Drake that does labor-intensive work for a living (digging, carrying supplies, turning a water wheel) would naturally be quite strong.
That would count as one horn. They are counted at the base, not at the tips, because some drake families do have antlers, and you can't really go around claiming to have twelve horns when you really have two horns and a set of antlers.

What would be the punishment for attempted murder?
Are brain damages (I.E. ADD, ADHD, Dementia, etc.) common? Do they exist at all?
Are there drake thieves? Like, sand drakes having it as their ''full-time job''?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Pythosart In reply to Fenris97 [2011-10-05 17:21:40 +0000 UTC]
Probably also exile.
Haven't really thought about that much. I suppose there could be, but they would manifest themselves differently than in humans.
I'm not sure how likely that would be. For starters, they're pretty big (larger than a horse, even for the smallish ones), and their hands, while very dextrous, are clawed and could easily damage the object being stolen. Plus, how do you disguise a Sand Drake? They don't wear clothes, and they all have unique markings and coloration, not to mention their horns (which can be filed down, but they are still countable at that point. And lastly, a thief would have to be able to climb and run fast, meaning it would require attributes of both the jungle breeds and the plains breeds.

Can sand drakes have piebald coats? Zebra/tiger stripes? Leopard spots?
How do albinos look? Like ''normal'' ones or different?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Pythosart In reply to Fenris97 [2011-10-05 20:07:09 +0000 UTC]
They can have almost any pattern, but colors are generally limited to "natural" colors. Patterns and colors run in a family line, passed on by the females. So, you couldn't have a mother with thin stripes (tiger/zebra) give birth to offspring with colored patches.
Albinos would probably have very faded or diluted markings, and be light or white in color. Their mouth and eye pigments would be dark purplish red, as that is the color of their blood.

How would a drake be affected if it were to lose one of the eyes?
How frail are one-horned drakes compared to other drakes?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Pythosart In reply to Fenris97 [2011-10-05 20:59:31 +0000 UTC]
Well, they only have two eyes. The three openings you see are different "settings". They're lenses that only let in certain types or intensities of light. So losing an eye would be the same for a drake as it would for a human.

Are your tablet drivers installed properly? Sometimes the tablet makes weird lines like that if Photoshop doesn't recognize the tablet.
You may also be using the wrong setting. You should be using the "brush" setting, not the "pencil" setting.
And of course, if you're using some crappy program like GIMP (yes, I am biased) or MS Paint, the tablet drivers may not work at all. It may also have something to do with your tablet.
What tablet model and program (if Photoshop, what version) are you using? If I know that, I may be more able to help you.

What canvas size are you working on? It may be that you're using a large canvas and staying zoomed out while you work. If that's the case, work smaller. Also, do your sketch on one transparent layer, then lower the opacity and work closer in on a new layer for your final linework. That should keep the lines clean.

That's still quite large. If you're just doing a sketch, I'd recommend no more that 3000 per side. You can work larger as you gain experience with the medium.
