Description Here's a preview of what I'm working on. I went with a wyvern because ~KatePfeilschiefter already has two quadrupeds that are better than mine.

I may still do a quadruped, but I'm not going to put nearly as much work into it.

Critiques welcome!

[EDIT] UPDATED: Colored some bones, followed some suggestions in the comments

[EDIT] UPDATED: Colored more bones, fixed some muscles, added standing view (top right)

I really like the design and the proportions of your tetrapod dragon, they are very clear and realistic. Even the tail is thin (lighter) and not thick like the common saurians and the patagius reaches the base of the tail.
But the first thing I criticize are the palms: they are very based on human arms; in flying vertebrates the wrist bends towards the ulna, causing the wing to rest on the thumb instead of the knuckles on the ground. In addition, the metacarpae lengthen, thus losing the shape of the palm.
I hope my contribution will be useful.

I mean I appreciate the sentiment, but this drawing is six years old...

The quad pose at the top has hella long wing arms compared to your bottom two sketches, and the upper arm [lower technically? according to humans? bah, between the wrist and elbow] is a tad thick for flight use. Also the neck gets a bit thin at the base, and the membrane, while close, does need to connect passed the booty.

Otherwise, one of the better wyvern anatomy pics out there, looks great gj

Thanks for the crit, but do have a look at the date on this! This is a very, very old piece of work.

Like! The bone structure is very nice for this design. I even like how you gave us a view of the grounded wyvern. That's a pose I hardly see for this type. Well, not since Skyrim came out. lol

Is that bone fusing into the keel the furcula or the coracoid?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pythosart In reply to KatePfeilschiefter [2012-03-09 04:07:51 +0000 UTC]

It's the coracoid. I haven't added a furcula. More from lack of thought than anything.

KatePfeilschiefter In reply to Pythosart [2012-03-09 04:14:40 +0000 UTC]

Ah kk, you may want to nudge it closer to the humerus and scapula of the wing then. In bird skeletons, the ends of the furcula, coracoid, wing scapula and humerus all kind of conjoin. I can speak better with pictures than words, so here are some sketches of an eagle skeleton that show what I mean- [link]

so will this be a compiled book set up like a biology book, or like a transcript of ones research, that can be purchased for a book shelf?

I have no plans to put this in a book. It's just a standalone anatomy study for my practice and hopefully my watchers' benefit.

flightlessdragon [2012-03-07 13:21:42 +0000 UTC]

It seems very front heavy, like it's going to topple over, I would suggest either shifting the position of the back legs or thickening up the tail to be a better balance for he weight of the chest.

Pythosart In reply to flightlessdragon [2012-03-07 13:24:36 +0000 UTC]

Please read some of the other comments. I've pointed out already that this is not a standing pose. It would stand with its wings as front legs, the way a bat would.

Tabon [2012-03-07 11:31:48 +0000 UTC]

I feel like that very large muscle going across the chest should end up as the shoulder muscle instead of it being separate; it's that that lifts the wings. The small shoulder muscle wouldn't be sufficient, see this: [link] Aside from that it's really cool :B I've always liked the way you do feet and wings in particular. And you make me want to do a skeletal/musclular picture of a pegasus or a cockatrice or something D:

Ah, you're right. I've fixed it now.

Do it do it do it. I vote cockatrice. Pegasi are so overdone. Then of course, so are dragons.

Is this dragon going to be crawling like a bat or moving bipedally like a therapod?

(Also thank you!)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pythosart In reply to KatePfeilschiefter [2012-03-06 20:58:37 +0000 UTC]

It would crawl on its wings like a bat. A wyvern like this would likely be clumsy on the ground.

(You're welcome! They're awesome refs.)

Pythosart In reply to NotXRAY0128 [2012-03-06 19:17:11 +0000 UTC]

M-Skirvin [2012-03-06 18:15:14 +0000 UTC]

I'm with the previous respondant. The physiological balance is off. The thigh muscles and leg length are too small for this creature to attempt to launch into flight. I have no complaints at all about the enlarged chest/keel, nor the wings, but the front to rear mechanics would not work. From mid-gut forward, he's quite bulky, whereas his hindquarters are disproportionately small. A good analogy for this would be songbird anatomy: longer legs, larger thigh muscles = better ability to launch from a standing position.

It's body proportions don't hearken to water birds, which are bulkier overall with short legs, so that analogy doesn't "fly". It's not built like a chicken either, which implies sustained flight.

Over all, this is a stunningly well done dragon anatomy, and the attention to musculature is superb. I would suggest envisioning this creature walking, and sort out where his center of balance is.

InuRyoko [2012-03-06 17:38:12 +0000 UTC]

This really looks great and I love how you have painted the muscles. However Its center of balance seems way off. It would topple forward if it was a real creature unless it was running which It doesn't seem like It would be able to. However if it was able to use its wings to walk it would be fine. And if it was supposed to use its wings as front legs it would be better to have the right wing be on the ground supporting its weight in this image. If not then you can increase the size of the back legs and make its center of balance shift up and back so that it is directly over the back legs or increase the size of the tail to counter act the weight in the front. This would make it more like a bird. You don't see birds with really long Torso and their orientation of their backbone is at an angle and not parallel to the ground.

I really hope this made sense and if I need to I can find some references for you. I really love the style and coloring on this image and cant wait to see more!

Pythosart In reply to InuRyoko [2012-03-06 19:20:52 +0000 UTC]

I get where you're coming from, but it wouldn't stand like that. This is more of a mid-takeoff pose to show off both wings. It would stand with its weight distributed more or less evenly between the knuckles on its wings and its hind feet. It would be pretty awkward on the ground, but it would be able to walk by using its wings as forelegs.

Thanks, though!

This is turning into a pretty rad piece, Pythos. With the critiques offered by Trinity, I think it's ok to not hang around the nitpicking from my part--well, for the exception of the Wyvern's lower jaw. May be just me, but I think that it looks a tad stiff to close at the correct angle and the jawbone too big to hinge properly to the much smaller (I'd say too small) zygoma.

Aside from that, I really like how it's turning out! The rib cage looks mighty fearsome, I'm pretty sure a beat from those wings could beat the shit out of anything. Waitin' on the result of this one :3

ps. you seen new AC 3 trailer?

HareTrinity [2012-03-06 16:09:48 +0000 UTC]

Showing the second wing's silhouette but not its anatomy makes it a little confusing, particularly in the skeleton pic where the tail also seems to be missing and the vertebrae start off making the spikes by the head but are remarkably flat on the spine... Curled thumb on the wing also makes the muscle pic a little hard to work out. Also, the feet seem very small considering that predatory flying animals who go after anything with an endoskeleton tend towards big talons.

Other than that the pentadactyl limbs are very clearly presented, the pose (other than second wing and thumb) seems both natural and good for the diagram and I like the ribcage.

Pythosart In reply to HareTrinity [2012-03-06 16:16:45 +0000 UTC]

Most of those are actually only problems because I haven't gotten there yet. Sorry for the confusion. I'm currently working on finishing up the skeleton, some of which will be showing in the muscle pic (namely the thumb). You're right that the feet are small. I'll fix that immediately.

Thank you very much for the critique! Much appreciated.
