Description
By the request of ~darkDRAGONxxxxxIt's pretty meh, but I hope it's helpful anyways. I don't think I did that great of a job with the drawings, to be honest.
This is more for dragonoids. Canines and felines have different muzzle types, so the snarly faces look different. The dragon snarl is actually closer to a feline snarl.
I think it's best to learn by observation, so here are some handy images that may help you out more than this.

You'd be best off looking through peoples' galleries for reference. Don't copy their work, but look at the way they draw snarl lines.
People like me, *beastofoblivion , =Shinerai , *Humingbird , ~darknature5000 , and *kilara are good to start with.

I've noticed that a lot of people tend to base their snarls upon mammals,
but has anyone ever tried basing their designs upon birds or reptiles?

Well I think the reason is that mammals have flexible, muscled lips that they commonly use to emote and communicate. Birds have beaks, and reptiles don't really have much in the way of lips.

I'm fully aware of that, but don't birds and reptiles have ways of showing off how they feel other than snarling?

it isn't too difficult to apply the wolf tutorials to dragons (facial structures tend to react in the same way) but it's always nice to have something more specific. : )
thanks for the tips

I love you o-o
I've been trying to find a good tutorial but everyone always draws snarly faces of wolves for tuts and I'm like NUUUUUUU [beats tutorial with something]
But this one is awesome! :'D

XD That's exactly why I made it a dragon. There are too many wolf-snarl-tuts out there. VIVE LA RESISTANCE!
Thanks!

You're very welcome. I don't think I've seen snarly faces so well done before. xD

Yep, nice and simple, especially like the bit with the blue lines and red arrows.
Normally the bit that goes "try and look for photos (now that you know what to look for)" goes on the image rather than in the image description but that's a minor detail.
Only thing I might also suggest is a bit of explanation for WHY snarls do that (mostly showing off the teeth but also the general feeling of angry, buckling down to attack; making it different from sneers or glares).

Yeah, I know. I kind of thought of that after I posted it, and I really don't feel like messing with it more.
I might write something to that effect in the description. Thanks for the suggestions!

Great tutorial! It's very simple to understand. It's also short and to the point, with references and "further reading". I like the use of red and blue lines to illustrate. Do more tutorials!!!

This is very good basic guide. I would still like to point out, that in case of wolves and many canines flattened ears are a sign of fear, while erected ears are a sign of agression. I don't know how it works with felines. But in case of horses it's the opposite (I think?).
Anyway, I understand that dragons are fiction and it's up to you to decide whether your dragons flattened ears mean agression, fear, both, or something else. x) You had just used animals in your demonstration, so I thought this is good to mention...

You're very right. It is a sign of fear, but it can be aggression if the creature is fighting or threatening a fight. Still, I might fix it at some point, because it's true that that last one looks a bit odd, moreso than angry the way I wanted it to be D:
Anyway, thanks for the critique! They are always welcome C:

"It is a sign of fear, but it can be aggression if the creature is fighting or threatening a fight."
I'm not sure if wolves ears are flat when fighting (though it would make sense), but the articles I've been checking claim that wolves ears point forward when threatening a fight. *nitpicker* ^^' Do you happen to have an article, website or something which tells otherwise? But cats, horses, etc. probably act more like the way you said!
You're welcome (though it wasn't much) :9

I'm speaking from visual experience. I've seen both dogs and cats fighting on a couple of occasions. When they're threatening each other, they flick their ears down and back up when they make lunges at each other, and if they're all-out fighting, they keep their ears back, I suppose to keep them from getting clawed or bitten. I've also seen it on a couple of show like Planet Earth and Life.

very snarly little beasties, although I'm still more fond of the overly-happy ones. I still love seeing the artistically done (aka, very realistic, or noticeably stylized work) snarly beasties, or which yours are some of the best I've seen so far. (=Shinerai doesn't do too many of them really snarly I see, most of hers are apparantly happy or neutral.)
