Description
Finally, the long-awaited Ax Cat reference that I have stopped being lazy for long enough to finish! Even so, it's still a bit half-assed...Any ideas for stuff to add? I know some of my adopters have been waiting for this to come out, and I'm sorry I took so long. If you have any questions, ask them, and I'll post them in this comment for everyone to see.
They need a new name...
Speaking of names, the scientific name means "Flat Head Egg Eater"

Questions-
Q: Does the hood/shelf/whatever it's called on their head greatly reduce their visual range? It looks like they can't look up, and some of their forward vision looks like it is interrupted as well.
A: They don't really rely on vision for navigation. Mostly they use their eyes for identifying locations based on the ground cover/soil type. The infrared eye can see 180˚ in front of the animal. Mostly, the cats rely on smell and electrical receptors in the bonnet, like a shark.
Q: Is this an open species?
A: YES! Ax Cats are now open to anyone. Please read through my rules journal before you create your Ax Cat [link]

So are you saying that the ax-cat looks imposing (like a wolf/predatory animal) but its personality is friendly?
Haha i can only imagine it as a grumpy creature

Not really, I'm saying they can be trained or imprinted upon from a young age.

I have literally fallen in love with this design, it's probably one of the best I've seen so far! *I'm not sucking up, I'm being truthful, so no hating me please. :c*
May I ask, if it doesn't bother you at all, can you give me a tip for making scientific names? (It's that I keep getting angry little fits about making them up from Latin Words, I have no idea how to make them "scientific")
Sorry if that question was a waste of your time, I don't like to possibly come up as annoying!

Pythosart In reply to Aradeya [2010-11-26 16:05:05 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much! I don't see how that's "sucking up". I just don't like people being all "Oh, we think alike, we must be friends, even though I've only just met you!"
Not at all C: Here's how I do it:
Scientific names come in two parts; Genus and Species. Genus refers to a group of species with similar characteristics. For example, the Red Wolf, Canis rufus and the Gray Wolf Canis lupus are in the same Genus.
For the actual names themselves, I try to think of a group of creatures that could be similar. The Ax Cat's Genus, Campester means "flat head", so there could be other creatures that use the same hammerhead shark chemoreceptors and electrical receptors, but don't have the second characteristic, which is ovorus, "egg eater". They don't have to be super specific, either. I usually go to a site with a list of Latin and Greek roots and pick a few that fit my creature's Genus and Species. Or, you could go to a translation site and translate what you are trying to say into Latin or Greek.
You're not bothering me at all, I love these kinds of questions.

Yeah, I wanted to point it out just because I read your deviantART ID, but yeah, I dislike those kind of people too. :l
And thank you so much, this really helped me out a lot! I was just creating the scientific names from just translated Latin words, but I figured it didn't look correct, so now I know why. Makes me feel pretty stupid, but now that I know it will be a great help!
Sorry, I have another question to ask, do you know any websites of Latin and Greek roots to recommend?
Thanks again anyway!

Ah, so people actually do read it. Brilliant!
Not a problem at all! What I usually use is this [link] It's actually the one my teacher recommended for my AP Biology class XD Also, if you have any medical textbooks handy (mum's a doctor, so I have lots) the glossaries of those can be very helpful.
No problem!

Alright, my mum's pretty close to a doctor too, so we have a lot of biology books and medical ones too, since she was a nurse and a vet, so we even have animal ones which should help.
And yes, more people have to read before they type. >:C Thanks so much for all your time, and the site too!

How do they age? Like dogs or closer to humans? When do they mature?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Pythosart In reply to Schadenfruede [2010-08-31 21:12:09 +0000 UTC]
They are sort of more like monkeys, if you know what I mean. They are a "fledegling" from birth to about age 3. They are juvenile (adolescent) from age 3 to about 10, and adult at 11ish. They are in their prime from ages 15-30 and elderly by about 60.
